Hello, bought a job lot of coins at a car boot today and this one got me stumped, it weighs 10.89grams and is 2.75cm in diameter. appears to be made out of either bronze or copper. There is a shield on the reverse which is barely visible on the pics so I included an image below with the shield outlined. Any help greatly appreciated!
It's an old English halfpenny token from the late 1700s. The portrait is of the legendary figure Sir Bevois, which appears on numerous kinds of tokens, generally from places not too far from Southampton. Here's an example from Portsmouth.
