What is your odd of finding silver clad (1965 to 1970) halves, if you ever calculated it?

1964 90 percent halves?
Pre 1964, but real?
Proof or San Francisco Minted?

Thank you

In a word slim. You've asked a question that is difficult to answer.

I guess you'd have to know how many are hoarded or in collections, how many were melted and then do the basic math with the mintages per year. How many held and how many melted are unknowable numbers. Perhaps the uncertainty makes searching and the occasional find more fun.

Here is a number you could expect. If you have about the same amount of luck as my friend.

Searching 10 boxes (10000 halfs) each week he finds between 0 and 40 (40% coins). Let's say 20 which is high for what I think he is currently finding.

Anyways that means He is finding 40% at a rate of around 0.2%, and needs to search around 500 coins to find 1 40% coin. I think it is actually less than 0.1% because of the skunks.

Still the odds are low unless you sort volume, or get lucky with teller trays. Obviously this number doesn't speak for all parts of the US.

Check this blog-post out by JobIII. Your comment reminded me of it. He kind of tried to rationalize, from a very primitive level, why we coin roll hunt regardless of the low expected rates of return.

The psychology of coin roll hunting

Petersun - The 90% halfs (non-1992 to present) are lower, and the 90% S mints are incredibly rare to find in circulation. I don't know the numbers, but I never found a silver S proof half, and the rates on the 90% were ridiculously slim.

Is [[2.5]] 40% silver halves in one roll a good odd after all? Some luck finally perched on my shoulder after rolls of failure.

By the way, I meant "your" roll hunting experience, and if you ever calculated the odds.

Well, I guess that I'm making it too difficult for everyone to answer.
How about this: would you please, if you ever hunted halves, write how many rolls you hunted and how many (in general) coins you pulled out.

Thank you very much. I would like to calculate labour.

in 3 boxes of fed rolled halves I found one 40% kennedy, 2 proofs, a 1989 bicentineal of congress and a 1980 paname foreign coin.

in 2 rolls of Cwr halves that I have received from the bank I found one 40% kennedy.

Thank you very much silvercoinrn.
So that means the odd of finding 2.5 (on average) 40% silver in one roll is good. (In other words, me finding silver at the percentage of 62.5% is positive)
Thank you for those who replied.

silvercoinrn,
Very hard. The tellers usually buy the coins for themselves. Otherwise, they were pluued out of circulation a long time ago. Therefore, it is almost impossible to get rolls of 50 cent pieces in Canada, especially silver ones. They're as hard to find as the voyageur dollars, and even more difficult than Peace dollars in US banks.
I hope this explains your question very well.

The odds do change constantly. I can search 10 boxes, not finding a keeper. Then, the next box contains 20+ silver keepers. On the teller front, 30 rolls and no keepers, and then 2 solid rolls of 40%. Catch my drift? On average, I pull 1 40% keeper per box. The odds hunting loose rolls are greater.
