I have just received two different lots with problems, and would like advice on handling them.
#1 I received a Morgan, year and mintmark I need, for 19.25 with shipping. The pictures show a possible EF coin except for wear on the ear. it is an O mm. I got it and found straight scratches or gouges over the ear and the eagles legs and tail. I contacted the seller, he said he has no returns but would consider refunding me part of the 16.50 if he felt the amount reasonable, anyone want to throw out some numbers for me? The front scratches are easily seen while the reverse you see depending on the light.
#2 Two morgans and a '25 peace price 31.99 w/ 7.95 shipping ins included. One Morgan is cleaned and the peace has a divot punched in the eye and 8 rays scratched around it. the auction said "all three coins are in nice condition without any problems except light wear and aging. I can live with the cleaned coin, it's a duplicate and I will sell it later, as cleaned. But if he does not want to refund all 3, how much do you think I should ask for back for a ruined Peace dollar.
I paypal with direct withdrawls from my checking, does anyone know if paypal will credit my account or give me "virtual" money.
Thanks in advance to anyone who reads this long post and responds

In regards to #2, it sounds like you got a stellar deal on the 3 silver dollars for $31.99. You paid short of spot; however, you got railed on the $8 shipping charges, but you knew the cost of shipping when you placed your bid. You will soon realize that, for the most part, ebay is place to dump junk/problem coins. Sounds like you got what you paid for..Caveat Emptor...consider this experience a cheap lesson learned. In regards to Paypal, unless you paid by credit card, you will not be refunded as long as the seller can prove, via delivery confirmation, that you received items.

I would open up a dispute on ebay regarding the first auction. I have never had to do this from a buyer standpoint, but I know there is an option for receiving an item not as described. Since any problems with the coin should have been revealed in description, I think you'll be able to get something worked out through ebay. It does not sound like the seller is going to be decent enough to really work with. Keep in mind that you can get common-date New Orleans coins pretty easily.

On the second auction, even with the shipping, you got a pretty good deal on these. Have you emailed the seller regarding these three coins? If he isn't willing to accept a return and offer a full refund, I would file this dispute also. While you seem to be happy with one of the coins, I don't see a 25% success rate with this seller as adequate. Once again, you can get very nice common date Morgan and Peace dollars for very reasonable money without getting ripped off on the shipping.

Since the items were misrepresented, I would ask for the shipping to be refunded also.

Can you post links to the auctions? I'd really like to see how he represents his coins. It sounds like this may be a seller who should be avoided.

I think your just being a little too picky. If these slightest flaws are this important to you, then I wouldn't suggest useing ebay. Looks like the coins were fairly cheep. Even if you could get a refund its going to cost you to send them back to him while you could just keep the coin for its silver/slightly above silver value.

To buy coins with problems knowing they have problems is one thing ,, but to buy coins that are said to be problem free and then finding problems is altogether another thing.

cpfull your not being to picky ,, if these coins were listed as problem free then both sellers owe you a refund including shipping both ways .

Susans advice is good and worth consideration . You should not have to accept less than the description of the coins in the auctions.

Thanks all,
I will probably keep the first one, but ask for 3 or 4 dollars refund but send the three back. One good thing, they both had already left positive feedback, if they are unreasonable I don't have to worry about a revenge negative. I won a coin from SuperDave the other day, so I can look forward to a nice coin in the mail soon to help get over these.

Whats the absurd part? the first guy has a (unstated) no return policy, all he is offering is a discount,if I don't ask for too much. The second guy has no coins to substitute, so I'll send them all. And the feedback thing, I don't want to give a negative, but if they don't work with me to solve these problems and I do leave a neg, I am safe from spite negs.

Can you post pictures of the coins? Links to the auctions would be helpful, too. It's difficult for me to say what's reasonable here without more information.

I disagree completely. Cpfull you are not being too picky. So, unless the seller made any potential buyer aware that the coins had substantial problems, and unless you bought them with the full knowledge of said problems, then you deserve to have this resolved to your satisfaction.

A cleaned coin and a coin with a divot drilled into it are NOT in nice condition without any problems! These are not slight flaws, they are big problems, especially as you were advised that these coins didn't have any problems.

It is not a matter of how cheap or how expensive your purchases are, it is a matter of honesty and integrity. You deserve a refund and an apology from a seller who breached his obligation to give you an honest and accurate description of what he was selling.

At least, that is my opinion!

The sad thing is that honesty will go a long way. We have sold cleaned/damaged/problem coins for more than many people sell uncleaned/problem-free coins for with the same detail grade because we reveal the problems in the first couple of sentences of the description. We also say whether the problems make the coin very unsightly or not. When possible, we also put "cleaned" in the title.

There is never a reason not to reveal ALL info about a coin. There is also never a reason not to accept returns, unless a seller won't stand behind what he sells because he knows it's misrepresented.
