I've had a look about this web site a bit and notice quite a bit of discussion on coin photos. Correct me if I'm wrong but, I'm thinking that digital images and the Internet have probably changed the business of numismatics quite a bit.

I've posted a few photos and have had comments come back on the quality of the photos, which is really cool. But it seems the constraints of the web site of limiting the size of images to less than 100k seriously limits the quality of images posted for others to review.

I've noticed this constraint being lifted on other sites as the reality of cheap storage is hitting web developers.

I was wondering what others might think?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

The 100kb limit may be a function of the forum software; I don't know if the images are part of the database, and if they are, >100kb apiece they could slow things down pretty quickly when you consider the thousands of images uploaded.

Two solutions:

1) Link images in using IMG tags from a remote site like Photobucket or the ilk. The forum software automagically resizes them to a percentage of your browser screen if they're too big.

2) Get 50 quality posts - and you naturally seem to be posting quality - and you're eligible for an Album here with much more generous size limits. You link from it with IMG tags as well. This availability may be the other reason for the 100kb "anyone" upload limit; we want people to stick around, and there are direct benefits like image storage for those who do.

I size to a standard 800px for most of my image postings; it's not difficult to get those to around 200kb or a little more.

Naturally with something good may come something bad. By that I mean many know how to doctor up a digital photo to make a coin look a lot better than it really is. This has happened to many that when they receive a coin that looked great and it turned out not so great.

You really have the photo thing down. Mind if I ask a few questions? Lights? Camera? Action?
Great shots and great coins!

See, that is the problem. That Canadian Cent has some strange language that may or could be English if a getter photo.
Kidding of course. Not only great photos but nice coins too.
