Just how hard is it to get a PO01 graded commem? The PCGS pop reports has 21 total listed compared to 241 PO01 Morgan dollars. There are 60 FR02 commems listed compared to 723 Morgans. Now I realized that more Morgans circulated but they too were used for pocketpieces.

Are they all different commems or are there doubles of some?

There are doubles with the Stone Mountain having 5. There are probably more dateless Columbians that would make a PO01 grade but the problem is it was a 2 year commem.

I cant say I'm shocked that stone mountain takes up a significant part of the population since I'm guessing that one was a popular pocket piece in the south when it came out, maybe even still enough northerners that disliked the south enough to just completely disregard that one as well.
Out of curiosity are there any of the commems that were just completely well preserved and dont even come close to sniffing that grade? Like did any of them happen to all survive in MS grades or close to it?

I'm going to guess that the Spanish Trail would be the hardest to find in circ condition with the Hudson and Robinson a close 2nd.

I doubt you'll see too many circulated Hawaii's either. But if you want something truly rare, try to find a low circulated Congressional Bi-Metalic commemorative.

Hawaiians aren't easy but there are more out there than you might think partly because they were minted in the 20's.

Not Mint I would imagine so. The norfolk even though not that expensive seems to have survived pretty well too.
Speaking of the Hawaii did we ever figure out if the rumors of a hoard of them being in a bank vault were true?

@Not Mint to Be: What percentage of "low ball" commems out there would you estimate to be graded by the grading services (e.g., PCGS, NGC, ANACS) vs. still being "raw." I would think that the majority of low-grade coins for each type have not been graded, but I'm about as far away from being an expert in your area as one can get.

Interesting topic posted by Not Mint to Be ... by now most CCF folks will have recognized that both of us have a passion for circulated classic commemorative. My personal experience ... I have been chasing these coins for over 3 years now and have never acquired a P01 example ... Quote: I would think that the majority of low-grade coins for each type have not been graded Indeed ... there are 45 of them in my Dansco 7094 ... if certified (which they will not be) ... my humble set would rank #2 all-time and perhaps even contain a few of the lowest ever graded examples of the particular type. IMHO ... there are several coins in this series that are rarely found in even high circulated grade ... Agree with Not Mint to Be that the 1935 Spanish Trail is the 'stopper' to the circulated series ... there is only 1 graded example below AU ... and it belongs to you know who. The great fun of chasing these honestly circulated coins is the never-ending hope that the next show will uncover a fabulous low-grade example ... I'm looking for my P01 Spanish Trail. David

how long would it take to make one? I've been wearing down a 1973-D Ike and in three months it's gone from UNC DETAILS (had a major check scratch) to EX-40. I figure I have another year before it hits VF. Silver should be much easier to wear down.

If you had a Clad Ike go from Unc to XF40 in 3 months you've done pretty good. I've seen some that guys have been carrying for 20 years and have just made it to fine.

I have carried the same AU Morgan around for about 6 or 7 years and its still AU. It was a High AU when I started or real close to UNC but now its probably AU-50. The color has changed also
