Hi-

Can anyone help me identify the gunk covering these newfoundland coins and whether it is at all removable and how much it will affect value. The obverse is in good shape. Thanks.

NEVER clean coins.]

Also, that just looks like dirt and/or tarnish. Nothing too bad and the coin on the left is in pretty good shape

Thanks Merc, but what's your opinion on value? And grade? Will anybody want such a coin?

Organic skunge can br removed from coins with a good acetone bath, INoraganic skunge is much more difficult to remove.

If the black blotchy toning is silver oxide, silver chloride or silver sulphide, forget it. Any inorganic chemical attempt to clean these coins will also further damage them.

i use PRO DIP silver coin cleaner. Its not a polich or anythin. Literally, dip in solution for 10 sec to 1 min, depending how much gunk is on the coin, and rince well with lukewarm water and then pat dry with soft cloth. Takes all the dirt and slime off the coins but leaves any tarnish and toning etc. Awsome product. use it on all my coins.

Back of the one on left is definitely tarnish only, can't say about the other faces. leave tarnish alone. If it's just dirt rub it in water of the acetone bath but I think of a lot of that is tarnish.
