I have a collection of 12 American Wildlife coins - 2 oz..each..silver proof, uncirculated... I really just want to know if they are worth more than their "melt" value.... I was told by a local coin shop that their only value is what the price of silver is now... is that correct?

Pics would help us a bit. But I'd guess your collection is worth a little over spot on ebay. Maybe up to $2-3 each, if you're lucky.

yoiu sill be surprised how much more a complete set will go for on ebay. but I would say you may get $5 per coin, if they are displayed nice and are in perfect condition.
