I have an 1893 penny that someone encased completely into a plastic mold

Is there some sort of magic to free it or is it garbage?

Unless its got a repunched 9 on the other side it's not worth the effort.If you're really determined to remove it a few methods have been presented in the Main coin forum but they all sound like a lot of effort.

The plastic on the other side is all cracked so I can't get a good view of the date..

I would say mabye attempt to melt the plastic off, then use acetone to remove the little bits that might stay on the coin? thats my only suggestion

leave it in the freezer for a day, take a hammer to it.. or acetone but that might take a long time to dissolve

Dry ice might help to make the plastic brittle enough to shatter...

Then again...

A long period of time in a freezer ... might achieve the same results...

Given the grade of the coin, and the surface will most certainly have a cleaned look to it, when finally rescued - it will be worthless. Why not just keep it as a cool paperweight? Or stick a magnet on the back and put in on your fridge as a conversation piece?
