Quote: Don't you hate when someone asks for suggestions for something specific and instead of responding to within the framework of the question with suggestions that fit the criteria, someone decides it's their business to steer it somewhere else entirely. I've seen so many things on forums that I don't agree with but for some reason, I don't feel it's my duty to set every one of them straight. Sorry, I overstepped didn't I. I thought that he was looking for a small dated world silver set that he could share with his son (congrats by the by way, I have 3 sons myself)as he got older.Something that was physically and financially unassuming so he could keep it on the qt from his wife. It all seemed to be morphing into a 100 coin, $10,000 world silver hoard. While I am new to this community, I am not new to collecting, can't count how many times I have seen a new member of our coin club try to start a collection by buying every affordable coin in sight , until he runs out of money ( or his wife or her husband goes nuts ), they have to stop and what they are left with is a collection of coins that are random and have no theme or cohesion to them. I thought that I was doing a good deed refocusing him on what it appeared he originally wanted. My bad......... I guess I am just OCD and order and focus are my pet peeves sorry to thrust that on everyone else. Being experienced in small themed sets, if that is what you want I would be happy to input.

It all seemed to be morphing into a 100 coin, $10,000 world silver hoard. Sorry, I should have clarified. I'm not hiding anything from my wife, I just don't want to advertise to anyone/everyone that enters our home that I have any precious metals there. Frankly, I'd rather no one other than my family, my coin dealer, and those I talk to here have any idea I have any interest whatsoever in silver. As I said in the beginning, I was looking for something a little more substantial and more original than the 10 coin sets found at APMEX. Like anyone else would, I'd like to complete this set with as little (monetary) investment as possible, but there will be a few ounces I'll have to spend a little more than I normally would (e.g. kangaroo, rhino, etc.). I appreciate everyone's input so far. Lots of good ideas that I'll take into consideration.

No problem, denc. I probably dropped the hammer a little harder than necessary, anyway. Truth is, most threads, if they reach any length at all, ultimately get contorted into every imaginable shape and size. Guess it's the nature of the beast.
I couldn't think of anymore 1 oz. world coins that Po and others haven't already mentioned. And like denc said, there's quite a markup on some. Unfortunately, if you're just looking to pay near bullion prices, your choices will narrow considerably.
I'm actually surprised that more countries like Russia, Japan, most of Europe and South America, and India don't have flagship silver bullion that are offered annually. Perhaps some of those countries do and they're simply less well known?

@SDCrow: Starting the collection before the baby's arrival is a good idea. Once he's popped out, pooping, crying, and you sleeping only 3 hours a night intermittently, and your wife's temper and, and... and..... interest and heart and energy you have left to spend on the collection will wane :)
@traevin: ya, kind of disappointed that more countries aren't producing pure silver bullion. Japan, South Korea, German, and many West European countries don't have anything I can find. All are sterling if anything at all. Not that there's anything wrong with sterling coins, just that the criterion I set for the collection is for 999+ (the britannia aside, you have to give a coin credit for coming up with a silver composition all its own)
@denco7: To each their own I suppose. Collections are almost by definition personal. If we have to measure by market value and worth, well, might as well not collect anything really. One can easily make more money spending the time that one does collecting silver coins by working overtime at a job. And we know we spend a Lot of time on our collections. Straight up bullion or "overpriced" commemoratives, none of what I've collected would make me $10 an hour (and I've moved over 5000oz of silver over the past 2 years, making bit over 10% profit). But, i'd get a kick teaching my son about each piece of collection I've got going for him.

So I've decided on 18 world silver coins for my son's 2012 set. I chose that number for a few reasons. For starters, I found a nice wood display for 18 direct fit airtites that I think fits the bill of what I've been looking for. Secondly, after completion of this set, I would like to start a second 18 Coin World set for him. For this set, I'm going to add one silver world coin per year from a new country. So, on his 18th birthday he will have 36 unique pieces from 30+ countries. That gives the other countries that traevin and poboxw were talking about time to get their act together. Thanks for all the tips. I've learned a lot by researching the various coins that were suggested.

For anyone interested, Modern Coin Mart has the 2012 Armenia Noah's Ark on their ebay page today as a Buy it Now 'sale' for $31.95 with free shipping (to the U.S.). I picked up this coin from their ebay page a few weeks ago from an auction listing. They have great service and fast shipping.

Good luck, I'm sure everyone here wants to see some pics as the collection grows, especially of the lesser known countries that make silver. If I'm not mistaken CoinWorld just had a few page spread with a list of newly released 2012 World silver coins.

SDCrow: Thanks for the heads up on the Armenian Ark coin.
I haven't seen it listed but the Lakota Tribe has been making silver bullion rounds since 2008 with Crazy Horse on them.

Starbux, that is an interesting coin that I have never seen. Thanks for sharing. Akane, I have 17 of the 18 in my possession. Just waiting on the right deal on the last one. Once I get it and the display I will be sure to post a few pics. Thanks for the CoinWorld tip. Allranger, I have seen the Lakota coins but haven't owned one yet.

Does anybody have a link to the CoinWorld article? I would be interested in it as I have a similar project. I got a Lakota coin the other day. The front of the coin is pretty nice with Crazy Horse. The reverse is more minimalistic, with a buffalo and some of the information. I still like it though and am glad I got it.

Glad to hear it traevin. I picked up the Somalia Elephant, Philharmonic, Libertad, Noah's Ark, and Britannia for my 2012 set all from their ebay listings for less than $3 over spot each shipped. It seems that they have just enough listings of the same coin in a short period of time that it saturates the buyers and you can find a good deal if you are patient. Starbuxinvestor, thanks for the tip. You're right, that is pretty fitting for this occasion.
