This is post #11 in my occasional threads comparing MS versus circulated coins in the classic silver commemorative series.

Up for viewing today is the 1920 Maine Centennial Half Dollar.

Net distribution was 50,028 coins ... and since demand by the collecting public was low most were sold to the general public at $1 each ... many of which found their way into circulation during the tough times of the USA depression.

Today the 1920 Maine is readily available in F-AU ... and also MS62-MS64. A search right now on E-Pray will show many examples in both grade ranges.

My MS set contains a lovely PCGS MS65/CAC coin. Blast white with cartwheel luster. Truly exceptional strike ... the details on the reverse wreath are amazing in hand.

My circulated set includes this G04 (my grade) Maine:

Truly enjoying the collecting challenge of completing dual MS-Circ sets.

Enjoy

A question for you (I hope this is the right section for it)... I have a few classic commemorative's with maybe (staple scratches, small nicks, pin holes)...

Are those now non-gradeable?

I didn't put the marks on them, that's how I bought them, and didn't notice to months later while looking back at my collection.

What commems do you have that have pin holes in them?

Another fascinating and entertaining comparison. Thanks for sharing. I'm at the point where I simply shake my head at your MS examples, a sign of admiration with a hint of envy. The obvious patience involved in obtaining such stunning pieces is hereby acknowledged and admired as well.

My condolences to the family of that poor moose that's gone missing from the circulated example.

Another cool comparison! It's great to see a truly top-end coin right next a very bottom-end piece. It's an immediate lesson in wear characteristics of each issue you've presented.

You've embarked on a pair of complimentary collections that each take significant effort to achieve your goals. Great collecting!

Not Mint: It's on the Monroe Commem (obv) right on the forehead. Two small holes. I'm thinking from a staple. Looking through a loupe they don't go done that far, but still distracting. The other mark is on the Sesiquential coin (obv) again on the forehead (near the eye). That one looks like a scratch, but it's kinda deep.... prob another staple mark.

I think I got dupped into buying them. Oh well, lesson learned. Bring a loupe and examine the coins a ton before putting down money.

Also to the OP. Yes, the coin sets are very cool. I'll have to go through all your posts so I can get a better handle on grading commems.

Anyone have a suggestion on a classic commem grading book?
