Just set up a new computer and no longer have my list of favorite sites. I wanted to visit a particular discussion board, and I thought an easy way would be to google my id name (same on the boards and ebay) to find a link to that board. In doing so, I found something that is mildly disturbing - basically because I am not sure why this would have been done.

One of the links took me to an ebay.com.hk (Hong Kong?- oriental characters) where someone has placed my ebay member profile page (from August 28, 2004) on the internet. I have never had any dealings with any oriental location ebay members, and I buy pretty much just exonumia items, which are essentially free from the China fakery problems as far as I know. I have no interest in what they sell, that is why it is just somewhat puzzling to me as to why someone in China would even want to look at my ebay profile, much less have it posted on the internet.

Does anyone know what might be going on here? I have not had anything go wrong, and with the amount of time passed, there is likely nothing to be too concerned about. Has anyone else ever googled their ebay name (yahoo did not find it) and found anything similar?

Well, that link did not work properly. But to find it, do a google search for "cwtokenman". When I did that search, the fifth listing down was one mostly of oriental characters. For that listing, click on "cached", and that should take you there. That search also yields a link to another ebay member's profile page that I had left feedback for in early Sept, 2004.

Here is the link to the other member's profile page. This is a US seller:

I couldn't tell you why these two profile pages came up for your search except that it might be some quirk in the search engines. I wouldn't be concerned about it. Since you also post on the C&PM boards, someone might have looked at your profile by clicking on your ID on the boards.

I tried to get your above link to work, but since it's ebay Hong Kong, there must be some character that loses something in the translation.
Rest in Peace

cwt, while researching our favorite Savannah seller, I found she came up in the Singapore ebay profiles (also ebay Australia), so I might presume that there is a certain amount of interconnectivity between the various international ebay sites.

This might also go a little way toward explanation of how your user-id came up on the search engines, especially Google with non-English websites. Google indexes and caches billions of webpages and I have to further presume that it indexes them from all over the world, wherever its search-bots can find them. If ebay Hong Kong (or Australia or Singapore, etc) can access every ebay member's profile worldwide, then Google can find you through that channel. I'm also an active ham radio operator (another very expensive hobby) and a search of my callsign K2FRD brings up websites from all over the world including many in non-English languages including Japanese and Korean. However, if one wants to change one's search results to English only, one may select that option in Google's Preferences http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en .

Thanks for the thoughts on the matter. I will probably never know the reason why, but it struck me as odd that someone would have taken the effort to put that on the web some 9 months ago. If it was kept up to date, I would think less of it. Again, thanks.

It doesn't have to do with being put on a website. The search engine web crawlers must have just found that particular page for some reason and "cached" it or saved it for future searches. There is often no rhyme or reason for what they grab. It really isn't anything to worry about. If you do a search for sul9, you get some of my posts from the ebay discussion boards (but not all). I don't know what makes some pages cache and some not. Bobby probably does (he's our webmaster ).
