What Do You Collect?

Never a straight forward answer from me;

For the high grade date run of German 5 Reichspfennigs in BU (or nice UNCs) then yes the letter matters it must be the A (Berlin) mint. Currently I need 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943 and 1944 to complete my set.

However I do tend to get the odd batch here and there of lower grade Nazi coins of varying denominations, usually F-EF, in this instance the mintmark doesn't matter.

Well Terry, Aetheling, remember, I collect world by type and year, so are most my lists, coins listed there are from differend places, in differend styles, and shure also from differend cinds of grading.
I hardly look at the exact grade when I put them on my lists, it's "a" little to much for me to do so (and my beloved wife will kill me when I stay all day up in my room *LOL*)
But, already a little hint, my world list contants abouth 23.000 pieces, together with the other lists, double the number to get my doubles in total.

This is my first post here. Nice to see such a friendly, chatty group of people - with a sense of history and of fun, too. (Kippers ... ugh! )

To answer the original question, I used to collect Australian Commonwealth as a kid, 'cos that's what was to hand here in Australia. I had a collection of all types from halfpenny to crown, all dates from 1911 to early decimal, excepting two pennies and one halfpenny. Years later, living overseas, gave them to my Mum because she said she was bored and I thought she could do with a nice hobby. Some time later, I asked her how the collecting was going, and she said "Oh! I sold them." I didn't talk to her for about seven years after that ...

But a month or two back, I saw a nice collection of Chinese silver dollars in a local store, and liked the look of them so much that I bought some. Now I'm going through the pain of trying to identify them all properly, and see what gaps I have to fill. There are a few apparent duplicates, but I'll need to check carefully to be sure, firstly because my Chinese is a little rusty, and secondly because there are some minor varieties among them. I'm using Krause's catalogue of world coins; is there a better reference I can get? Also, I understand that rarer Chinese coins have been extensively faked. If anyone can point me to an online source for info on detecting forgeries, that would be very helpful.

Hi Yoyo, welcome to the forum! I don't know a better source than Krause, but I bet if you checked around there are probably books specifically dedicated to the coins you desire. There are a *lot* of fake Chinese coin auctions on eBay- buyer beware!

To answer the original question, I am currently working on a North American type set. I have many U.S. issues (although nowhere near complete!), some Canadian, and some Mexican. I think that many of the Mexican coins are very pretty, and I'm thankful that not too many others collect them- they are pretty cheap compared to U.S. coins!

I also have coins and bills from many European countries, handed down to me from within the family. I am not working on anything with those currently, although I'll still collect them when opportunities present. There is a good chance that I'll work on a U.K. type set at some point.
