NO smelters do not melt the coins anymore but there are still many people who make jewlery who melt it. One guy spacifically says he melts coins and turns them into pandora beeds. he says a 2 dollar dime can be turned into a 300 pandora bead

Here is a sad example of a coin going off to melted.

Looking through the coins that are being boxed to be sent off and melted, I saw this 1909 Newfoundland 50 cent coin.
It is in a good grade but has a hole in it. These coins are very under priced and has a mintage of 200,000

But who would want it with the hole .. tomorrow I will put it back into the melt box.
