I have been working on a complete set of President dollars and find the date and mint on the edge to be sometimes difficult to read. I buy rolls of dollars at the bank, which include not only the Presidents, by Saca..... dollars. These also have the edge markings and many of the later issues, 2001, 2002, have the date and mint mark worn off. I think the edge markings are a poor location for the dates and mint marks.

I hate the edge mark. Its too small and Ps look to much like Ds when you first start looking at them after a while its not that bad just annoying.

I'm not surprised you are having difficulties seeing the date and mint on the edge of the 2001 and 2002 Sac dollars considering they didn't put the date and mint on the edge until 2009. OK since you say later pieces I assume you meant 2011 and 2012. Well the date and mint probably aren't worn off, the pressure applied to put the information on the coin was probably not sufficient. If the distance between the edge die and pressure roller is a fraction of a millimeter to large you get a weak edge impression. Once again the problem is they are trying to go too fast. If you move that pressure roller a little closer you get a better impression, but it takes longer. They are running the edge machine at a rate of 1000 coins per minute. that is about .05 seconds per coin. If they move that roller closer it give a better impression but it may take .09 seconds. The through put rate drops to 600 coins per minute.

Putting a coin in an Album with any info that is required to read on the edge is really a mess. I can not even think of what would make our Mint consider that move. And if those coins make circulation, the edge is one of the first things that gets dinked, dented, smeared, etc.

I really like the president dollars but agree that the edge markings are not very convenient.
Even with coin in hand they are not clear, its not like a deep and bold engraving it is a bit wishy-washy and hard to read.
I only have 12 of the presidents and just put them in an album page in any order because it was to painful to put them chronologically.

I too hate it. That info should be on the flat of the coin. The Presidents are easy enough to know the year, and so to the Native American. The MM...well, a good loupe is a must for me.

Putting the date and mintmark on the "third side" of the coin is one of the more bonehead ideas from the mint. They obviously didn't ask us collectors what we thought about it (it stinks). But I really think the dollar coin is much better than a paper dollar and I spend them all the time. Do you think there is ANY chance the mint will move it back to the front or back in our lifetimes?

Probably not for this series since the moneys already been spent on the technology and they seem to have given up on this replacing the bill for now. Hopefully they never do this again though. The only thing it makes any sense on is the 5ox pucks but even then I hate the placement of it. At the very least keep the mint mark on the coin

Not just collectors but anyone that wants to see what the date is. IF those were actually used in circulation, the edges would be the first thing messed up. When you drop a coin, ever notice the edges always the worst of it.
