Anastasius-I---Ae-Follis---Constantinople

Anastasius I. AE Follis. Constantinople. DN ANASTASIVS PP AVG. Pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. / Large M, star to left, cross above, star to right, A below. Mintmark CON.

AE Follis, 34.10mm, 16.0g

This is a very large heavy coin, the largest I own now as well as being my very first Byzantine coin along with the Anonymous Byzantine Class B Follis.

I have attributed the details as best as I know how, based on what I see. I really need some help giving this coin a catalog number. I looked around and found a close match but not quite right. SB 16 looks close, the bust portrait on mine is different in style. Also, my coin outweighs that one at a range of 23-27 mm. It's also close to SB 19. If many workshops are used for this catalog attribution then it might fit this one.

I don't have any books at all for Byzantine coins.

I was in the British Museum way back in 1971, in the strong room of the Department of Coins and Medals. Needed a prior letter of interest from me, to make that type of a visit. Wasn't a problem, I was living in England at the time.

Saw tray after tray of rarest of the rare Byzantine gold.

I asked them the same question about books on Byzantine coins. Mr Carson who was a curator of coins and medals at the time suggested I get a copy of
"Late Roman Bronze Coinage" By Carson, Hill and Kent, written in part, by himself. No illustrations, more of a methodology to identify by Emperor, Mint and Officina. Fairly thin book and perhaps comparatively not too much to buy these days.

I have had a copy of
Byzantine Coins and Their Values" by David Sear. Only a bit harder to use than his books on Roman coins.

Whitting has a book: "Byzantine Coins". This is a rather large book on the history of Byzantine coins. Excellent colour illustrations, but poor binding, which goes against the physical long term survival of an otherwise an excellent publication.

These days, excellent reference can be made on the WILDWINDS and VCOINS websites.

I would love to get a copy of the Dumbarton Oaks Catalogue on Byzantine coins.

At 34+mm this is the large module, at that size it should be Sear #19. Nice coin.
