I came across these coins in a box which belonged to my great grandfather. I have tried to id them, but have had no luck. Any help identifying them would be greatly appreciated.

First off, to the community.

These two coins are very worn, so identifying them (mostly finding the date) can be very hard. But, I think the first one is a Spanish cob, and I think it could be Philip IV of Spain (so the date is probably around 1650). But I'm not really good at identifying these, so I could be wrong.

The second one seems to be also a cob because of the cross, but because the lack of detail, I can't really find a period (but it could also be Philip IV)

Anyway, you'll probably have to wait for a real Spanish cob expert to come help, but I hope this helped a bit.

I never support defacing coins, but since you found them that way you could do cool things with them. I was thinking earrings or charm bracelet fobs. Then you could tell people the story when someone comments on how cool they look!
