Back in June, Canada's Privy Council approved the
RCM's request for a circulating commemorative coinage program for the War of 1812; the authorization came via Order 2012-803.
The
RCM's War of 1812 program is to consist of a $2.00 coin along with eight 25-cent coins. As we know, the $2.00 coin featuring the
HMS Shannon has already been released. Still to come in 2012 are 25-cent coins featuring Tecumseh and Sir Isaac Brook. Each design will be issued for circulation with and without colour. The colourized versions will feature "the symbol of the Government of Canada's commemorative program for the War of 1812 in red..."
In 2013, we'll see 25-cent coins featuring Laura Secord and Charles de Salaberry. As with the 2012 issues, the coins will be issued with and without the red War of 1812 symbol.
With the
RCM issuing a silver $10
HMS Shannon coin in conjunction with the circulating $2.00 coin of the same theme -- and promising more coins for the silver series -- it makes me wonder if each of the above circulating coin design themes will also be issued in fine silver. Time will tell...
