Back in June, Canada's Privy Council approved the RCM's request for a circulating commemorative coinage program for the War of 1812; the authorization came via Order 2012-803.

The RCM's War of 1812 program is to consist of a $2.00 coin along with eight 25-cent coins. As we know, the $2.00 coin featuring the HMS Shannon has already been released. Still to come in 2012 are 25-cent coins featuring Tecumseh and Sir Isaac Brook. Each design will be issued for circulation with and without colour. The colourized versions will feature "the symbol of the Government of Canada's commemorative program for the War of 1812 in red..."

In 2013, we'll see 25-cent coins featuring Laura Secord and Charles de Salaberry. As with the 2012 issues, the coins will be issued with and without the red War of 1812 symbol.

With the RCM issuing a silver $10 HMS Shannon coin in conjunction with the circulating $2.00 coin of the same theme -- and promising more coins for the silver series -- it makes me wonder if each of the above circulating coin design themes will also be issued in fine silver. Time will tell...

I'll be only interested in the face value 5 pack. And try to pull a set from the circulation to put into the upcoming free collector card.

I hope the Shannon is a series. I bought the $10 coin and thought it was nicely done.

I was disappointed that the series is turning to 25 cent pieces. I was hoping for a twoonie series.
