I was searching through quarter rolls yesterday when I came upon this:

Help-With-This-Quarter-What-Is-Going-On?

Bing!... I thought. I look at the quarter itself and see it is a 2000P South Carolina. I am pretty certain this is not a silver quarter because the silver quarters were S mintmarked. But the rim shows no sign of it being clad. What is up with this? Any thoughts or insight?
Rest in Peace

Post mint plated, probably for some HSN type promotion selling set of 5 different plated State Quarters in SILVER! GOLD! PLATINUM! Valuable! Collectible! Limited time! Only $89.99! and when someone realized they were ripped off, it just got spent.

Just LOVE that cynicism!
(Also most probably true)

Actually, I was suspecting post mint nickel plating, because it more closely matches the color of the obverse / reverse metal surfaces.

I have seen some non-plated coins that you can see any copper from the edge. Its like the copper layer on that side was thinner, and the nickel covered it up.. or something. It gets me all excited too, until I take a closer look.

It could be soap or the like clinging to the reeds. I sometimes get excited only to have it be premature. :(
