Doing one of my favorite searches this morning, I found this one for 49.99

These are the seller's pictures, and once it gets here I will take better ones, but I think this is at least a 63, maybe a 64.

The seller inherited it from his grandfather. There were a couple others listed, and I'm confident that this is an actual image of the coin offered, taken by the seller.

No mention of a mint mark in the title or the text of the listing. Looks to me like somebody dumping grandpa's pride and joy with limited knowledge.

I wasn't going to buy this coin, but there are so many listed with really high selling prices, that I figured maybe it'd make a nice addition to my 7070. I have an equally nice 88-P in it now, but I like the idea of putting specimen's of numismatic interest, or in this case (and the case of my 1920-D FH SLQ) conditional rarity.

I know most people fill type sets with junk ... I just never understood why.

Think I messed up? I like Morgans as much as the next guy, but I haven't studied them like I did the Barber coins when I was assembling a set of halves. I have no "finger on the pulse" of the Morgan dollar market like I used to have on the Barber half dollar series.

It looks like it very well could be MS. Hard to tell for sure from the seller's photos. I think it is well worth the chance for $50.00 as the worst case it may be worth AU. (closer to break even) Nice score!

After I posted this ... I looked at some of the previous sales of this issue on Heritage. There's an unsold NGC MS63 on there that looks more like a 66. This one, using that as a barometer ... never climbs that high on the food chain even if it "is" uncirculated.

I hope there's no trickery afoot here though. The hair detail above the ear on this coin is exceptional for a New orleans issue. They're notoriously "soft".

I did a little more sleuthing ... same image for the reverse of 3 coins offered. I requested a refund. If the seller refuses, I'll file a claim with paypal.

If this were an AU-58 96-O, it would have a retail value of about $625. I doubt anyone is willing to sell a genuine AU 96-O for 49.99. The obverse in the top photo actually looks like a razor sharp 1896-P coin and has gold edge toning from an album. The reverse photo shows no sign of album toning like the obverse which would be impossible. Detail is way too sharp for the average 96-O. This one looks like a scam.

Not so much a scam as somebody being lazy. The woman pulled all of the listings. I explained to her the esoteric nature of the numismatic hobby. I explained that each coin was as unique as a human fingerprint and that pictures needed to represent each individual coin.

She may list the collection, or may dump it at the local dealer.

Yes, I thought that after looking at the obverse, that it was a picture of a philly minted one.

I had a CC minted morgan that had light periperal toning on only the obverse, so it does happen.

I agree, I have several coins with toning like this on one side only.

How true though, way too good an obverse strike for a Nawlins Morgan.

I schooled the seller ... and she's going to list the collection. We exchanged several emails, and she refunded my payment without hassle.
