Hey, I realize that I'm buying too many coins, but stay with me for a sec ...

=> I "bundled" this coin with my Lion & Bull coin ...

... but "wow" => I'm sorry and maybe it's just me, but I'm thinking that my last two coins are absolutely "outstanding" ... no?

I'm on a roll ... but after this coin I've been told that we have to save up for house-siding and a backyard deck (so sadly, this may be one of my last frivalous and awesome coin-purchases!!) ... *sigh*

Oh, and I realize that this coin may lie in that zone of "highly pirated coins", but I am pretty confident that it rocks (because it's from "my guy") ... plus, this bad-boy is definitely being sent to David Sear for authenticity ... I'm just sayin' (better safe than sorry) ...

So, enjoy => I think that this coin rocks!

Rhodes AR Hemidrachm
Date: 408-390 BC
Diameter: 13.0 mm
Weight: 1.7 grams
Obverse: Head of Helios facing
Reverse: Rose in incuse square
Characteristics: Rare early issue

Steve, I can hear your bank acccount weeping from here. How much did you pay for those two?!

And the condition is fantastic - there must not be many in that fine condition!

This coin should be shot into space so that someone out there can find it and look into our faces!

Yeah, I'll believe that when I see it. I remember a guy who couldn't spend any more on coins cause he was saving for his vacation in Vancouver. Hmmmm, I just can't remember his name....

Jerry, Nice coin for sure. I don't know what you paid and it's none of my business, but I think I would pay a pretty penny for this coin. Both of these latest coins "rock" as you say. I love that Rose reverse.

I keep coming back to this coin type--and hope to add one to my collection.
Your particular coin is very interesting because the style of Helios is a bit different than on most I've seen. The earlier coins I've found have wilder hair and outlined eyes, such as below.
Perhaps an earlier date than most explains the stylistic differences and the higher weight; most hemidrachms seem to weigh between 1.1-1.5gr. Congrats on this find--it's in really nice shape!

CARIA, Rhodes. 408/7-390 BC. AR Hemidrachm (1.63 gm).

Hi DVC => wow, I'm surprised that you didn't attach your Deniro clip!!

Yah, I talked to "my guy" and he guarentees that this coin is legit, but he also added that if David Sear says that it is a fake, then he'll take it back on return (that was kinda like the lynch-pin in our bundle-deal) ... so again, I can't lose with this fella => he has my back!!

=> oh, but I thought that my coin looked very legit when I danced around wildwinds and compared it against the other contestants ...

NOTE => I absolutely love this coin and I might actually hang myself if it ends up being a fake (stay tuned)

That may be one of my favorite movie quotes--but I reserve it only for special occasions. This coin is just distinctive--for the reasons cited.

I see no reason to doubt your coin and hope Sear agrees. It is older that the others shown and a full century older than my didrachm (6.6g) which I have owned for longer than some here have been. It was expensive then and from a good dealer but I'd not afford another now. When you get old and stop working you may have to cut back so buy them now while they are cheap.

Hey, nice => wow, thanks for your support, dougsmit ...

NOTE => I will "definitely" keep you guys posted on the final verdict => for as we all know, the fakes are almost more fun than the real show-ponies!!

=> man, I don't know about you guys, but I'm having an absolute blast collecting these coins!

Thanks for tossing-in your Two Cents every now and then (I appreciate it!!)

dougsmit => your coin is extremely cool ... extremely

Is it just me, or does your version have a distinctive Americana type look to it! (it has a definite statue of Liberty kinda thingy goin' on, no?)

=> very cool coin ...

CURIOUS => you obviously spent a fair amount of cash on this awesome coin ... ummm, was that money well spent, or are you wishing that you bought the lower-end version for a bit less cash?

After looking at the coin Doug has posted, I have to admit that I am not all that keen on the style of Steve's coin.

In my opinion, it would be well that it is taking a trip to David Sear.
Please let us know what David Sear thinks of it. I would love to have my uneasiness supressed in this case.

I genuinely hope that all goes well, and my cause for concern is baseless.

Here is my Didrachm (6.64g) BC 387-304

I hoped I could add something. All I have to add is this coin. I got a while back from "my guy".

Hmmm?

Hi DVC ...

=> hey, I was a bit curious why you were quoting weights for "legit" hemidrachms, yet you ended-up posting a photo of a hemidrachm that fell outside of your comfort-zone? (ummm, a coin that fell very close to being within my coin's comfort weight) ... anyway ...

Plus, by the way => the other two photos that were posted by dougsmit & Ancientnoob were of "didrachms" not hemi-drachms ... my lil' dude is a finesse coin, not a brute!!

=> Apples versus Zucchinis

Regardless => I would bet my entire collection that my cute lil' Rosebud gets the gold medal verdict from David Sear!

Oh, and I will gladly take all side-bets!!

Steve--regarding weight, I just quoted the range for most Rhodes hemidrachms I saw for sale and on acsearch. I don't have a "comfort zone" on these coins--which is why I looked for an earlier example.
