As a newbie, I would appreciate some input on your decision-making process for selecting a US coin, ie. Morgan or St. Gaudens or Liberty. When evaluating 2 coins, is it better to chose a rarer minted quantity with a lower MS number or a more common coin with a higher MS? Assuming that they are priced about the same.

I always buy the best coin I can afford at the time, when it comes to key dates against common dates always go for the keys first because they will always hold their value where the common dates will not

I love your sig line, averyb2. Nothing like honesty to strike up a conversation.

The decision to be made between your two coins also has to involve conditional rarity and demand, if I read correctly that your desire is to buy the coin which will tend to gain value better in the future.

My point is, the low-MS common coin might not be so common in that low MS grade. For example, there are a bazillion 1884-S Morgans, but if you want one in MS, you're gonna pay because they get pretty rare in that atmosphere. Or, it might be subject to much greater demand because of popularity than the higher-grade coin. I might make that distinction between an MS65 Morgan and an MS65 Three Cent Nickel, just because there are so many more collectors interested in the Morgan.

Hopefully you're more befuddled now.

If it were me, I'd always go for whichever coin was rarer in the grade. Unless, of course, the other one was prettier.

Hi and welcome to our forum glad to have you if it were me I would have to agree with Bryan . I would rather have a key date coin even in a low grade, key date coins don't always come your way so if you have the money it is best to get them while you can and good luck.

Bruce.

Bryan is absolutely right, get the keys now, they will always go up in price. The higher the grade you could afford, the better.
