I got this odd piece of paper in a large lot of foreign currency a while back and have been rather puzzled as to what it is. Its denominated as 4000 lira and is definitely Italian, but beyond that I'm rather perplexed. Is it some manner of bond coupon? The paper its printed on is rather glossy, and the reverse makes it look even stranger.

Somebody apparently once visited David with that thing. ;) A "biglietto d'ingresso" is an admission ticket - this one was issued by the Ministry of Culture, and at the bottom you can see a (stamped?) "Galleria dell'Accademia" note. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galler...emia_Gallery The other side has (at the top) the full name of the ministry again, in the middle you see an "ad" for its culture magazine http://www.bollettinodarte.beniculturali.it. And at the bottom you see where it was printed - at the IPZS which, by the way, the Italian Mint is a department of.

So I assume these things could be used at various different museums?

Yes, this ticket type was used by several Italian museums under the "auspices" of the Ministry of Culture. I suppose that 4,000 lire (about €2) was a single admission, but such tickets - more expensive then - could also be had for multiple museum visits or for a certain period of time. Here somebody posted photos of a few similar tickets (but less colorful than yours): http://www.flickr.com/photos/morgai...photostream/
