Hi Everyone,
I recovered this coin just below surface between a pair of rocks during an extra low tide hunt.
I believe it is an undated 400 Reis issue of
Johannes IV 1640-1654.
I don't have a world coin book, and have not been able to find a match online.
Dots visible between cross arms, where date is placed on other issues.
denom on right of crowned shield, 4 dots to left of shield.
any info on rarity of this coin would also be appreciated.
I imagine it's fairly scarce when you can't find a match on the web
Thanks for looking! HH, Herbie.

Great find! From what I can see in the photos, I'd say you're right: it looks like a Joao IV 400 reis (or one cruzado), 1640-1656 minted in Lisbon. KM-52. Most of these were countermarked to raise the value to 480 or 500 reis by the following kings.

Probably you can read some letters of the inscription

IOANNES IIII D G REX PORTVGALIE
IN HOC SIGNO VINCES

size 40mm 23 g

Well, if the size is about 32 mm must be 200 Réis.
The picture it is not clear but the 4 could be 2!

Thanks 960Coins and JSalgado,
This coin currently measures 38mm, and just under 22G.
I do need to polish my camera skills,
The 400 and dots (actually small circles) are visible in hand.
I've seen later dated examples with a countermark that
looks like SOO, (500) to left of shield,
Nice to find one that left Portugal before being revalued.
The Early Silvers I recover with my hunting methods are
often short on condition, but I don't hear about many recoveries of this time period from Land Sites.
Makes it worth getting dirty!!
Again, Thanks and good Day, Herbie.

Definitely a great find. They're scarce to begin with and even more so without the countermark. Can't really find an example in any of the big auction house archives.
