What would a non-circulated, still in plastic seal 1997 gold 1/10 Canadian Maple Leaf with the family privy mark be worth? It is a 9999. Calling coin/pm dealers around my area and have been quoted anywhere from 10% below spot to spot+3%. We have 4 of these coins. Could use a little extra cash, but don't want to 'undersell' them either. Also considering holding on to 1 or 2 if the value is likely to increase.

Thank you for any insights!

The price will predominantly be based on spot gold price. If you sell privately you will get a bit over spot (10-20% maybe?) because of the 'portability' etc. The right buyer might pay a bit of a premium if they're interested in that specific coin. I presume the family privy mark was added afterwards? If so, many would consider it post mint damage and the coin less valuable than an unmarked one. As to whether the price will go up or down in the future, that's anybody's guess. Will gold drop back to historic norms or soar with fear of paper currency devaluation? Your guess is as good as mine!

I cannot say for certain, but I do not believe the privy mark was added after. My understanding is that the coins were commissioned by Dillon Gage and around 100,000 were minted. The 4 I have are each in a mint sealed packet. My husband was gifted them 10-12 years ago from an elderly gentleman for some work he did. They've been stored in a sealed box since so even the plastic pouches are untarnished.

Thank you for the estimate at value. It sounds like it may be a better option for us to seek a private buyer.

What it appears you have is one of the gold coins the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) produced under a special contract for Dillon Gage. The RCM began striking gold and silver Maple Leaf coins with a specially-designed privy mark in 1997 for private companies as long as they met certain mintage minimums -- your "Family" coin was the first. The first gold privy-marked Maple Leaf proved to be quite popular, as over 100,000 coins were produced.

These pieces are "numismatic" and do carry a small premium over melt value. Recent ebay sales have been in the range of $185 to $200 (USD). With gold currently at $1,600 (USD) per ounce, your piece has about $160 worth of gold, so the premium collectors appear willing to pay is somewhere around 10%.

Hope that helps.

This is inaccurate. The ‘Family' privy was part of the dies the RCM used to strike these gold MLs, it was not the result of "post mint damage."

I am unfamiliar with kijiji. What region would you recommend listing this in? I honestly do not think it would sell very well in my area.
