Hi guys

Found this 2011 dime in my pocket that has a groove in the rime all round the coin...Funny thing is it is dead centre on the rim...Anyone know what could have caused that...?

Aw, crap, now I have to check all of my dimes now. Thanks! :)

Does the groove stop at any point(s)? Is the face damaged?

No Libertad

It goes completely around the coin...Does not stop anywhere.

Interesting!

Looks like the depthness and thickness are the same regardless if inside the denticles or in the surface. If this is correct, it can only be after mint (if the grove was there before, the flow of metal would deform the grove).

At any rate, great find!

(and this is just my opinion)

Some types of bezel coin mounts (so it can be hung on a chain) would do that to the rim.

Having a garage sale here today lots of change to look thru.
Found two 2011 dimes with the same ridge, must be imparted by the collar.
Two hours later and I've found a 2010 and 2012 with the same ridge, now I'm really curious, don't look often enough at the third side of the coin..

I am stumped. If the collar had a lip like that, it would be an obstacle to the feeding/ejection.

... need some rolls of ... ugh ... dimes ...

Garage sale is over and now that I examine them with a loupe they appear to have been struck in a split collar,or perhaps with no collar. Is this a new technology at the mint?

I have some 2010-2012 BU 10-cent rolls. Perhaps it is time to do some squinting and check my 10 rolls...

Wert, I remember when you first came on CCF... I am really, really impressed with your observation skills (and I don't impress easily in that category). You see things that are different, as opposed to looking for something that _should_ be there...

Good eye!! Are you sure you were not a geologist in your former life?

Garage sale is over, beer is all gone,no need to peer through my loupe in bright sunlight.Things look a lot a lot different now,the line is not raised anywhere it is incuse at all points, the bright sunlight and beer combined to create an optical delusion.
The gouge,I believe,is cut in the blank during the rimming proccess, striking does not fully fill the groove and there is nothing to impede the withdrawal from the collar.
