Never mind the "chinese" fakes of even common coins by the hundreds of thousands, or even the sophisticated fake "mint sealed packaging" that is shaking the high end market for silver rounds.

How many of us are up to speed on the 3D printing revolution?
(1) Using free CAD software, anyone can then
(2) Go on line and Click to choose the material,
(3) wait for it to arrive in the mail.
YES these are CRUDE...
BUT THIS IS AVAILABLE TO ANYONE RIGHT NOW, it's cheap, and is JUST THE BEGINNING of the "do it yourself" 3-D printing revolution.

That's the problem with advancing technology, someone will use it to con others. The Chinese will also get better at their counterfeit trade as they get better technology to work with.

As someone fairly new (3 years) to coin collecting, it is really frustrating to know that there are sooo many fakes out there, and they just keep getting better. The only thing we can do is become more proficient in catching the fakes as we see them.

TPG's have had to change their slabs because even those were counterfeited to sell the counterfeit coins. Don't just buy a slabbed coin thinking it is good without checking it out.

Aye, computer aided design is going to throw a spanner into the works when it comes to fakes. I'm not worried about Shapeways (which is still cost prohibitive per piece) more than I am worried about someone with a 3D lathe who can cut dies.

Steve knows this field. See his links.

NOT TO WORRY... This old timer sez "Change is part of life and part of a life time of collecting Change". Somebody on another thread of CCF said that if he is going to spend much more than $40 or $50 (as I recall) he'll buy a slabbed coin... and I think this means from a known reputable dealer.
Myself, I am itching to start a collection of fakes. And I enjoy the challenge of learning how to identify fakes.
Here are three GREAT sites I follow on the subject
http://fakes.numismetrica.com/
http://cccbhcc.com/index.html
http://www.seateddimevarieties.com/...mintmark.htm
***AND HERE IS ONE THAT SELLS FAKES
http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale...a-coins.html
Studying this list of fakes... including 90% silver fake morgans (if you can believe them), and including fake slabs!... was useful in understanding the field.

Take the Counterfeit Detection course at the ANA. Relax, take a look at the fakes, and learn to recognize them. My estimate is that 3-D printing will take about a decade to reach near the level of sophistication to begin fooling collectors. But once that happens, someone will figure out new ways to identify the fakes. IMO, it shouldn't be more of a problem than the one we've got.

With todays technology counterfeited coins are only a small segment of what is coming. Already many, many other items are being made only many of them have other names for now. Such as copy, reproduction, duplicate, etc. Other items have a name that is real but the items are fakes. I've always liked all the variations of Duracell batteries out there. With coins already there are so many out there and no one really knows who has them in their collections and don't know. So many times we all hear of someone that has had coins in their possesion for a long time and go to sell and find out they are fakes. And now with all the TPGS fakes, even more difficult to know what is what.
And don't forget as home printers get better, what is a real dollar bill?

Good Point Carl,
Being "coin focused" I haven't spent much time on fake paper money. The printing press is ubiquitous, and has been around since before paper money.

As to home and commercial printers and copiers, every color jet printer/copier sold is factory programmed to print an 'invisible' unique code on every image it prints... and this is uniquely traceable back to the original purchaser of the machine. (so, "do not try this at home.")

This doesn't stop the bad guys though. I'm sure the printers and copiers are working overtime in many parts of the world.

Correction: It's only traceable if the machine isn't second hand, and they paid by credit card within the past few years. :-)
