I looked for one of these for quite sometime. There are many fakes, and a few good fakes. This series has a relatively huge weight range approx. 7.8 - 10.8g, again making the spotting of fakes very difficult. I believe I did right by picking up this 8.00g issue. There doesn't seem to be any of the usual signs of forgery such as casting seams and pearls.I took some high res photos of the coin and couldn't find any thing to make me think it was fake. So in that regard I am happy. The coin seems to be struck rather then cast. My coin tends to hang on the lower end of the weight range...I would have loved a super heavy one but I'll take it!As far as price...I poked a small hole in the ceiling. I hope maybe some of you could weigh in, many eyes are better then one and assure me I did well.. Thrace, Thasos AR 21mm 8.00g Obverse: Satyr Abducting Nymph Reverse: Punch

I see nothing wrong with the coin other than the cracks and scratches. These exist in several variations and range over a wide date range. I know some earlier ones have a more simple hand on the nymph (a claw) and the last ones show the scene more 3/4 angle so I suspect this is in the middle range (mid 5th century). These also come in a half size version called a drachm. I don't own a stater and my drachm is somewhat worn. It seems a lot of the price on these seems to follow how graphically ithyphallic the specimen is. The one from acsearch below has the claw hand I believe is earlier. http://www.acsearch.info/record.html?id=67056I consider this a decent example of a coin that is ridiculously expensive in very high grade and one that you should be happy to own until you decide to buy the high priced upgrade. I see no reason to doubt it from the photo but always append that statement that photos are never safe all on their own and nice coins need to be bought from trusted dealers.

The fact that the nymph has a claw is a bit disturbing, but kinda strangely intriguing ... => ummm, does anybody know the story behind the claw-chick?

Interesting looking coin, I don't really know anything about this type but it would be a nice addition to your collection.

Well I am pleased that the coin appears ok to you guys. (with the pic disclaimer) I would love to buy a upgrade, alas I don't think I will be obtaining one in better condition anytime soon. (unless someone wants to lend me 3500 Swiss Franks ) Personally I don't care for the claw hand...is this the first example of a prostheses? Or the first example of some whack style? I do appreciate everyones comments and opinions as well as provided sources. @ Steve- you should get out more. There are actually quite a few "erotic" ancient coins. There are some Roman coins you might be interested in if your have very deep pockets. Check this out.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpintriaI have a problem though...I would love to buy all my coins from "trusted" dealers but unfortunatly, most of the "trusted" dealers charge prices several hundred dollars beyond my spending capability for a coin in similar condition.
