I have a question on slabbed coins. Why is it that PCGS is much more expensive to buy a coin graded by them then NGC. I was looking at some proof graded coins I like and the the NGC coin sold for about 50.00 and the PCGS coin graded the same sold for about 150.00. Why is there such a big difference.

I think there are a lot of reasons, but I think the main reason is the amount of coins graded pf70 by NGC compared to pf70 from PCGS. These numbers lead people to believe that PCGS must be much more strict in their grading, hence the coin will have a better chance of being the actual grade that was given to it.

More folks will chime in on this one, and the list of reasons will grow substantially.

PCGS has enjoyed a reputation for being conservative in grading, so, like Tights said, the perception among knowledgeable slab purchasers is that there's a better chance of the grade being "correct".

In addition, the PCGS fans seem to be a bit elitist in certain ways. I don't know if I can explain this right, but, since NGC has the restoration service (NCS) and NCS will slab "problem" coins, the PCGS guys seem to think that PCGS is better because they refuse to slab any coin with any kind of problem (cleaned, damaged, corroded, rim dings, etc.) I have seen coins that PCGS body-bagged for rather miniscule defects, and a few old coppers they refused to slab because of supposed non-original surfaces. I think they were WAY off the mark on several of these coins. I guess that is a pretty good indication that PCGS is more conservative.

NGC typically has better turnaround times than PCGS, and, IMHO, NGC is better at grading Darkside material (foreign coins) than PCGS. Also, NGC will accept submissions directly if you are a member of ANA. I see that as a bonus.

All in all, it really depends on what you want. If you're a speculator or investor looking for the best profit potential, PCGS is probably going to be your choice.

There's a lot of hype that usually goes into answering this question, but let me try and give a quick-n-easy answer. PCGS coins are priced higher, because they cost more. Since their set-registry program excludes NGC slabs, there's automatic overhead cost that must be applied to crossing coins over, and furthermore, PCGS charges higher rates to begin with.

There is some market perception that somehow "PCGS is better", but for the most part, that's baloney.

There is a coin shop that I go to sometimes. He doesn't care what slab it's in. He will buy the grade HE THINKS IT IS. pcgs,anacs,ngc,pci,abcd.....it doesn't matter. I asked if He bought a pcgs 65 coin from me and I agreed to sell it at 64 money (yeah right) because thet's how he grades it, What would he sell it for in his case. As a 64 marked up a bit or as a 65 as in the holder. He said he would sell it as the grade he bought it for.
I wish I knew for sure.

Yes, what we hear is that PCGS is more conservative. And, yes, they are more expensive. Knowing that, the figures you really need are:

1. How many of the same coin does each company grade?
2. What percent of the coins grade 69 and 70?

If PCGS only graded 100 and 7 were 70's, that's 7%. Then NGC did 1000 and graded 70 coins as 70; that's 7%, but "NGC sure cranked out the 70'S"

Without all the data we don't know for sure. The conception is with PCGS. My money is on NGC and ICG.
