I have a concern after reading up on "Bronze Disease". I have 2 coins I consider "my precious" lol they are the oldest in my collection, one has ok detail and a very dark patina the other has great detail BUT a bit of '"bluing" I am not sure if this is the bad stuff or what to do about it if it is. I'll post a pic so you can see for yourself.

Not BD on the one you've shown, just hard, green (and benign) deposits (malachite ?).

Hello Matthew - to the forum.

Nice coin, I have no idea what it is so I'm assuming its Greek - an area I don't collect so know little about unfortunately

Your coin looks fine, I dont think you need to worry about Bronze Disease.

Generally the harder the encrustation the less you should be worried about it. Yours looks solid and is almost certainly harmless verdigris.

Dusty, flaky, light green deposits are what you need to be worried about, often it looks like a fine 'fur' or even a 'frost' that disintegrates on touch. It can appear in other colours but is not very common.

If your still concerned gently pick at some of the green areas with a needle, gently is all it will need (no digging and not hard enough to scratch the coin) and see if the deposit starts to disintegrate. I dont think they will.

It's a Philip II ae unit (Macedonia... father of Alexander the Great) and I would leave it as it is... unless you know exactly what you do (very easy to damage a coin if you don't).

Ok thanks, Yep it's a Philip II I have 2 of them, I am not even going to try and pick at it with anything harder than a brass brush and that stuff is solid so I'll just keep a watchful eye on it and maybe cover it in ren-wax.

No need to wax it. Just gently try to remove the deposits with a toothpick if you want to but don't force it off. It's ok as it is, covered with history

Oh, and ... (I have no manners )
