This arrived today. $18.50 including postage. Should I send it back?

Send it back? No way. Not only is it in great condition and the detail striking, but, correct me if I'm wrong, this coin is rather rare. Especially at that price. If you don't want it, I'll take it!!

You'll end up with a fake JW. Someone posted this coin earlier, with a twin, on Forum... oh, it's Doug

I'd still take it, only so I could know what a fake looks and feels like in hand.

Was it the dealers intent to pass it along knowing what it was? I'd send it back either way.

This is a known fake which I should have realized from the casting pearls (raised dots from faults in the mold) but did not until I had the coin in hand. It had a fake sand patina which rubbed off when I had it in hand. When there is a fake patina like that you start looking closer and I found it in the Forvm fake reports. I thought it went too cheap so I now suspect that some other bidders saw it for what it was from the photos. I should have. I wanted it as a comparison coin with the other of the type I have that is silvered and was going to post it as a silvered vs. sand, which do you prefer. Now I prefer real.

dougsmit => ummmm, so now what do you do about your situation? ...

Now that you've determined that your coin is a fake, I'm assuming that you challenge the dealer and ask for refund, correct? ...

... but what do you do if the dealer refuses to refund your cash ... and/or what do you do if the dealer agrees to refund your cash? (do you still also report the dealer for selling a fake coin, or do you assume that the dealer was also tricked by the fake and let it slide?) ...

Thanks

Problem I would see with such a coin (not of the greatest value) is, if the seller accepted the return, how would I ship it ? Cheap coin, cheap service, i. e. snail mail... but once the seller gets it, he could say he never did (no tracking). This has happened to me in my earlier days of collecting. And since more "secure" mailing options, with tracking, would chew away most of the money I want to recover... ?

You can not insure a coin that is worthless and expect the post office to pay off if it is lost. The dealer has not responded yet. I'd be happy to add it to my 'Black Museum' but am not sure how much it is worth. That is a problem with really good fakes. They can be as interesting as the real coins. My genuine one of the type was only $29 and it is fully silvered. I assume the makers also are doing more rare coins but I'm unsure at how you can do lost wax and sell the product so cheaply.
