Hola! I thought it might be interesting (and instructive for a noob like myself) to start a thread on where peeople source their coins- whether it be online (and if so, what sites would you recommend), at clubs/societies (none in Ireland ), at fairs and expos, or the old fashioned route of walking into a shop and buying in person (Luddites!! ). I've bought two ancient coins recently (well, ever), and I bought them online at Forum Ancient coins.

All my purchased coins currently come from coin shops (although I'm going to need to find a new way due to the coin store near me being mostly mint sets and low grade foreigns) The rest of my coins are from circulation or gifts from friends and family.

I buy from a variety of sources, but mostly on line. My number one go to source is vcoins.com, followed by Numismall. Then, I have certain sellers I follow on ebay. Mostly they are either sellers I have done business with in the past or they are reputable firms, i.e. HJB or Pamyra. I have a list of these dealers I would be glad to share, but you have to have 50 posts in order to use the private email. BTW, Forum is listed on vcoins as well.

You Americans and Canadians are so lucky to have coin shops that you can just stroll into and browse around!! I s'pose it gives me another reason to travel!!

Sadly, there are no coin shops I can stroll into and buy ancients around here. The shows are pretty light on dealers in ancients too. A lot of the ancients I buy are from dealers in Europe, with a few exceptions in the US. I have a list I'm willing to share too--I hope you stick around and enjoy the forums!

Quote: You Americans and Canadians are so lucky to have coin shops that you can just stroll into and browse around! Maybe in certain parts of the country, but not here in Tampa. All we have are coin shops that cater to collectors of modern coins. I do travel a lot on business, and I have looked in many foreign countries. However, most countries have antiquities laws so it's not always so easy to "stroll on in" and buy Ancients.

My favorite source is in person at coin shows but those happen infrequently enough that most of my coins came through the mail. In the last ten years or so, the Internet has replaced the printed catalog or list for the most part because it is so much easier and cheaper to have photos of the coins online. Once I bought coins from word descriptions and had to face the decision as to whether to send back coins that were not to my liking. Photos have really improved the percentage of coins that come without surprises. There is nothing like seeing and handling prospective purchases and the number of shops with good stock is small enough that coin shows have taken over #1 position in my heart.
This question brought to light a statistic that I found interesting about my collecting. In 1997, I started my web page on coins. Since 1997, I have almost exactly doubled the number of coins in my collection. That means half of my coins date to the Internet Age and half to the good old days. What will come next?

I have to say if it wasn't for the web and the information and availablity of ancients, I would have probably never started collecting ancient coins.

The only way I can in the Texan country: circulation. You'd be amazed to find what circulates down here!

I have bought each and every (crappy) coin that I own uncleaned. The first I got was at a carboot sale where a dealer had a box of romans and the rest were off ebay from Chimaira Antiquities. Very happy witht he seller, lovely guy, even allowed a request.

I live in Northern Manitoba (Canada), so the chances of an ancient coinshow breaking-out somewhere in this part of the woods is absolutely "zero" ... => so I am forced to order everything via the internet ... luckily, I have one excellent source (my guy) and a couple of additional great sources (I pretty much stick to a small group of coin dealers that I've managed to build a certain trust with) ... otherwise, if I'm ever thinking of stepping-outside of my comfort zone I will usually post the coin here on CCF before I gamble and buy from an unknown dealer/source) ... Man, I "really" envy you dudes that live in centers where you have access to actual "coin shops" ... kickin' it old-school must be an absolute blast, eh?!!
