Not knowing much yet about coin collecting but I noticed this on a 1903 large Penny. I doubt if this "W" is a mint stamp and would like to know what it actually means.

Its a counter stamp. Done post mint for a wide variety of reasons
That appears to be a 1903 Canadian penny also
