I was searching on you tube earlier and wandered across a set of video's promoting this website http://www.trustedcoins.com If you search youtube the person who made the video is called Ilya Zlobin and that name will bring up many of the video's. These video's are pretty good for a novice like me to get the rough background on many of the characters who appear on old roman coins (I am not sure I like the guys delivery particularly but there is also text below the video's giving a summary of the people involved) Anyway that tempted me to look at the website...the prices seemed exhorbatant but they have 65% off some of the coins at the moment (not that many of those coins really appealed to me, it seems nobody ever discounts the most desirable coins its always the imperfect ones) I wondered if others had dealt with the company and what they thought (both of the prices and the quality of the coins/service) I wonder if the supply of a "lifetime garuntee of authenticity" (stikes me as strange to limit the garuntee to just a lifetime, either it is authentic or not and that status shouldn't change) and a little information comes at a large premium. Anyway maybe these video's will be of use to some who like me have not heard the stories of many of the ancient characters that they are looking at.

I know who that seller is. The prices he sells the coins for is often ridiculous.

Holy crap! I am no appraisal expert, but I know enough to recognize that this guys is pricing his stuff rather optimistically. His reduced prices seem to be still more than double than the value of the stuff he has that I am familiar with.

His ebay identity is highrating_lowprice. I think he has it mixed up. It should read Highprice lowrating. We had a discussion about his coins a long while back. I remember bobbyhelmet and others all agreeing his prices were ridiculous. However, I have been noticing lately that prices on ebay seem to have gone much higher in a very short amount of time. I know I'm "frugal", but prices are reaching a point where I will have to limit much more how much I can spend. Has anyone else noticed higher prices? Or is it just me?

Hey, hey, hey => I know what you're all thinking, but despite my frivolous-rep, I refuse to believe that "I alone" am able to effect the average price of ancient coins!!

I recognize the ebay name. I've been searching for coins there and he has a lot of the type I want, but I'll go to heck before I pay his prices. I've seen the higher prices discussed at forvm too in the ebay and other auction heading.

I hate to break the news to you but all guarantees are at best 'lifetime'. The life that limits you most is not yours but the dealer's. About half of the dealers I have patronized in the past 50 years are no longer living and their business was not continued by their heirs so finding out that the coin I bought in 1990 is fake now will mean nothing except that I should have been more careful then.
I actually bought one coin from HRLP. It started out at $1000 and dropped to $600 before dropping again to $500 and went to me finally for $350 which is probably twice what the coin is worth to anyone except me but it fit my specialty collection very well and I figured it might be a while until I saw another. If he prices things at 5x fair value and sells few, he can stay in business. Your only problem will be when he actually gets something (probably by accident) that you can not get elsewhere. I have not seen another coin that he has offered that I need at 1/10 but that does not mean I won't tomorrow.

Well, I think FORVM Ancient Coins are also expensive. Whatever coins are there, I can almost always find one cheaper somewhere else. Or a better grade coin for approximately the same price.

In my experience with this seller- I have been able to obtain what I think are relatively good deal. His prices are more then double the value of the coin. Again in my experience, I often use the Best Offer feature and I was able to get a nicely worn Lifetime Alex III drachm from Ionia, Miletos, I paid approx $30USD. I think I got a good deal, the asking price was I think $58. I have never bought a high priced I from him, and never had to challenge his authenticity so as far as I am concerned hes "alright" If you look around you can find stuff at a cheaper price, but if you have your eye on one of his particular coins I wouldn't rule out buying from him. Hes always been right by me. I will say that in the few case that I have bought a bronze coin...oddly the coin is better in the picture then in hand, IMHO. Goodluck, but also don't rule out an ebay seller with a few feedbacks, some people don't sell all the time on ebay and may only own that one Ancient coin in their auction, but the upmost care should be taken before ever parting with your money.

Sorry Jerry, I don't "entirely" blame you for the sudden rise in prices for Ancients. Maybe a little. I'm not sure why the rise, but perhaps it is because of increased interest among the masses. Perhaps with the internet, people are finding that 2000 year old coins are not expensive as compared to their modern counterparts. I really don't know. I just believe prices have suddenly gone higher (especially since steve6x has become an Ancients Numismatist)

Since metal prices have been higher, the interest in coins have went up some it seems like to me. Those would include bullion, modern era coins, etc. It seems some people find their way to ancients after collecting modern coins for awhile. It was the same for me.
Some people claim that metal detection finds are starting to get harder to find. Thus the price is more expensive. Not to mention whatever sellers think they can get out of a coin, they will try it.

Yeah, I dont think I will be using him because his prices do seem OTT. I would prefer to deal with a trader that has things priced fairly and won't budge than one that prices high and takes offers. The reason being is that the first attitude shows that they are pricing at what they believe are fair prices and the second attitude is that they will rip you off if they can get away with it.
Anyway, those little video's are someway useful for the novice trying to remember who is who in ancient rome...

I have found that most dealers have priced their coins in a way that they can discount 10% to 15% for valued customers.

I think the internet has a lot to do with the price of ancient coins, before I took to ebay about about a year ago. I had only been able to find a few ancient coins in my immediate area. I always figured New York would have someone but did want to travel there find out that I could afford anything. It seems that people in CT don't want anything to do with them. I called all around for literally years- since I was like 15. (I am 28 now)No coin shop I ever went in had one with a few exceptions, someone would have a "widows mite" or an unidentifiable LRB. Then I found the internet and the world market is at my disposal. I also think the more we talk about it the more the price will go up. Even within the last 2 years I have seen prices rise on Ancient coins, when I first hopped on ebay I could find a sexy denarius for $30 now its $50. I found a guy who had a few ancient coins recently at the coin show here in town. The selction is small, the prices are great and the dealer is but one. IMHO its the internet and the ability to go to places like wildwinds for attribution help where the books to do the same job are often incomplete and expensive in the extreme.(Sources are sources and are rare in themselves and must be procured) I have never seen a book on ancient coins at the local Barnes and Nobel or Walden Books so with that being said it is the Forums and the internet driving the price. I think we as the collectors here could very easily control the price of ancients, and I think we do unwillingly. Many times I see us discuss a type of coin and then all of a sudden see several of that kind listed on ebay within a few days of the POSTS. I have seen it happen more then once and enough where I think its uncanny. Not to mention some personalities here on the forum and the FORVM have great numismatic merit, through a life time of collecting and there for could have a big influence on the price. How many people do you think collect ancients, and have never been to these forums, and why is So- JW / Steve / Doug /Gil, the coins we have are worth alot and the ones for sale are over priced. Am I right guys...someone agree with me.

Before jw posted his name, when everyone was saying his prices were sky high, I immediately thought, "it's probably highrating_lowprice". Everyone that sells ancients would have to go out of business before I buy from him. So annoying when half the search results are his way overpriced coins . Quote:However, I have been noticing lately that prices on ebay seem to have gone much higher in a very short amount of time. I know I'm "frugal", but prices are reaching a point where I will have to limit much more how much I can spend. Has anyone else noticed higher prices? Or is it just me? I have. Hard to find a very good-looking denarius under $50 these days like ancientnoob mentioned. First ancient coin I ever purchased online was $12 shipped. If it was on sale right now I could easily see myself paying $15-$18 for it, from looking at what similar coins in similar condition are going for now. Not much of a markup I know, but still...
