Anyone know anything good or bad about Canon scanners? I am looking for a good, COMPACT, inexpensive scanner to scan misc. items. My current All-In-One printer/scanner is terrible with no depth of field and unless the object is lying dead flat on the window it will be out of focus. I saw this one advertized. Seems like it is capable but also seems awful cheap. Thanks for any help.

I use an Epson V100. It's capable of significantly higher resolution than the Canon, and has enough depth of field for me to apply my tilted-coin luster correction. I couldn't recommend it more highly. Best yet, there's a rebate for it. Here it is for $44.49 at Newegg, after the rebate:

Steve, I've had four scanners: one very compact, one which was "average" size, one which isn't compact at all and an HP three-in-one machine which suffered the same problems you state - lack of resolution. The first "average" scanner and the compact were both Canons, but neither had very good resolution. I finally sprung the bucks for a higher resolution scanner -an HP 3970- which I still use, but is quite large although it does very well for scanning slabbed coins, the greatest problem I had with the smaller machines (especially the 3in1). It seems good resolution comes with size. And price.

My computer is five years old and I may have to buy a new one
but the preasant motherboard still got an ISA slot with programmed television selector for telextext and half parallel and half USB 1
So that my scanner runs on a parrallel over the printer to the computer . ( Windows 98 SE and no driver upgrades available )

What is the best gold coin scanner around do you think ?
I guess it would be a photoscanner since I do not have any slabs

This is what that fotoscanner can do ( the field in the stars was sandblasted to give some kind of matte )

Here's an unretouched scan from my V100 - note that the Half Sovereign is the more lustrous coin, and therefore appears darker in the scan. I don't know how this rates in the quality scale. I own no Proof gold with which to make a specific comparison to ageka's beautiful example.

I do not understand that scan I will post a 1910 and 1914
and you will see what I mean
That reflection I only get with nowadays coins like the 2005 sovereign or with coins that have been cleaned in the past
The coins I show were bought for melt in the far past
