Hi, Please state the grade of this silver dollar. The first set of photos is using a diffuser with a USB camera. In an attempt to show the patina/luster of the same coin the second set is using a USB camera without any diffusion of lighting. Thanks, mdpmedia

The coin looks cleaned in the first set of pics, but less so in the second set. Is that a die crack on the O of Dollar? As for the grade, AU55?

AU-58 looks like it saw just a tiny amount of handling. Very nice coin

I'm having trouble seeing the details of the cotton balls in your photos. That's the first thing I look at for signs of circulation wear. Beyond that I see nothing that would land this below AU58. Could be an MS coin with better photos.

The other line extending from beneath the 'D' over to the 'O' is just a piece of fiber that later blew away.

Also, note the fine scratches on the face. Hopefully, this will better clarify things to be able to make a decision. Thanks, mdpmedia

With all due respect, in the 40 years I've bought and sold Morgans I've never used the cotton balls? as a determining factor for AU or BU grade. I could show you MS64 Morgans with absolutely no detail in them.

By the looks of the marks on the cheek this lady has taken a severe beating at some stage. AU50 at best

They will show signs of wear on a coin of this strike quality if the coin is circulated. Beyond this, there is no need to show me a flat struck MS64 Morgan. I've seen them.

I was not speaking of a flat struck Morgan. I was speaking of very ugly worn looking cotton bolls on MS specimens. This is not uncommon. For me determining this coins and others for MS status I look for broken luster or grayness in the field which I do not see. For this coin to be AU I would expect more of a scratchy grayness in the field. The OPs photos are fairly good so I can only go by them. To me the scratches on the face look like bag marks. Hey, I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again but this coin looks MS to me.

I really think the AU-58 grade was made for coins like this. It is tantalizingly close to MS in every aspect but when you step back and review the whole coin on photo set #2 it just doesn't quite look MS - strike is nice and sharp but there seems to be just a trace amount of rub on all the high points and luster seems just a tad diminished as one would expect if the coin had just a trace amount of handling.

Quote: show me a Morgan with a strike quality like this one with no detail on the cotton balls graded MS64 This isn't weak, but compared to most 1896's this would be considered a weaker strike. I agree that on a strong struck Morgan, the details in the cotton balls has a factor in the higher grades (MS-60+), but this one might grade MS just because it isn't the strongest strike for this year. Plus, it being a common date will help with the grading. TPG's are much more lenient with common date coins.
