Lf-#5-Temnos,-Aeolis--Greek-Or-Provincial?
17.5mm, 2.7g

TH_MNOC, turreted draped bust of temnos right
THMN EITWN, tyche standing left holding rudder and cornucopiae.

Ref: BMC 18; SNG Cop 274; SNG v.A. 1677

I really like this little coin but I'm having trouble with the attribution.

I have found it attributed as a Provincial (AD 253-268 Time of Valerian-Gallenius) and also as a Greek (Temnos, Aoelis 3rd-2nd century BC.)

Does anyone know why or have an opinion about it.
Is it perhaps just a typo on the Forvm/Coinproject example?

There is a coin almost identical to it from Kyme that is dated around 253-268 AD.

Temnos was a little town of Aeolia, near the Hermus River, which is shown on its coins. Situated at elevation it commanded the territories of Cyme, Phocaea, and Smyrna. Under Augustus it was already on the decline; under Tiberius it was destroyed by an earthquake;[1] and in the time of Pliny it was no longer inhabited. It was however rebuilt later.

Hi Doucet ... very interesting post ...

=> oh, and a very eye-appealing coin!!

... sadly, I kinda suck at the attribution-side of the game (NOTE => I'll wager $5 that Bing will be the first guy to try and sort-out your question)

Thanks steve,

I seem to be a magnet for oddball coins in one way or another.

I found a similar coin, ref BMC 120, indicating this style is from the third century AD. Besides the style is too Romanized to be pure Greek. Take a look at this link:

Ok, so which one is it? BMC 18 or BMC 120. They both appear to be the same coin type. BMC 18 is 20mm and BMC 120 is 17mm, OP coin is 17.5mm. It looks like size might make the difference with this one.

The BMC 18 reference provided the Gallienus dating so the error was simply giving a BC for the AD. I thought the style looked a bit earlier than that (perhaps Phillip era?) and have no idea on what such datings are based. When you see a date spread like the Kyme of over a hundred years given, I read it to mean that they are just guessing.
