One of these days, I'm going to remember the camera, when I have the week's spending money in small bills that people can make change for. I went to the bank today, and took out this week's spending money, but they were out of all smaller bills, so I got stuck with Q200 bills, which are our largest banknote, but amazingly difficult to spend, as no one has change. So, here's what a week's worth of Guatemalan spending money looks like.

Oh, and a Q200 is worth somewhere around USD$25 or so... I rarely get dollars, and when someone insists on using them, I usually tack on an 'exchange' fee of 50 centavos per dollar, roughly, because dealing with them is a royal pain.

Not really. That takes care of my boats around the lake to different villages, and transportation around the highland area.
as well as food, and normal expenses. My business expenses are much more high, and dealt with separately. Some business stuff I pay out of my 'spending' money, because I get a better tax break that way. About 40% of my weekly budget is the 'Silly Stuff That Nobody Expects' fund, which pays for incidental stuff that nobody sees coming. I usually end up spending all of that portion.

To put it in some perspective, my dinner tonight was a shredded carrot salad with onions, lime juice from my trees, and sesame oil. Total cost? 1 Quetzal, or about USD0.125 cents. Tomorrow, and Thursday, I have to spend about Q4,000 at the wholesale vegetable markets to buy about 600-800 lbs. of produce for my business next weekend.

I have often wondered why getting change in a latin american country is so impossible. Is it because they don't have enough capital for the change drawer?

Guatemala is one of the worst in being able to make change. Tomorrow, I get to go to the bank when it opens, and wait for the armored truck to arrive, and then trade a bunch of those Q200 notes for bundles of 5's, 10', 20's and 50's.

Makes you wonder why third would countries ever issue banknotes higher than US$10. I see they have little need for them.
