What do the letters '(d)' and '(a)' mean on the 10 centimes coins of 1855, and how do you identify the difference, please ?

They seem to be listed for several mints, as well as for a few other coins, eg 2c, 5c, 2F.

I thought they might be assayer or engraver marks but that can't work for different mints.

Do you have a photo ?

'(d)' and '(a)' are the marks of the engravers.

Dog's head = (d) = 1843-55 = Jean-Jacques Barre
Anchor = (a) = 1855-79 = Albert-Désiré Barre

One of the these two can you find on the left of the date.

mvg,
Aernout
