Here are few of my favorite 'one sided' designs (actually incuse reverse punches) - all small. Not all are 'squares' but they do go down as a punch to fill out the other side. Notice how some are plainer than others even though they don't have a real 'design'. Aigina obol 5th century BC: Aigai 1/8 stater 5th century BC: Byzantium tetraobol 4th century BC Acanthus, Macedon tetraobol 5th century BC There are many other little Greek silvers with incuse squares that contain raised designs of interest (cicada, scorpion, owl, eagle) but that is another post for another day.

Steve, very nice coins, you are off the charts, I'm very jealous, getting these in nicer grades is the only way to go, the next one you will need is the Turtle, like Doug's.... .. I let one pass and I'm kicking myself.....

Samos, Ionia, AR obolFourth century BC Diameter: 7.9 mm Weight: 0.52 grams Obverse: Lion“s skin Reverse: Scorpion SNG Aulock 1817 Ummm? ... maybe I'll try to grab a turtle next week? ... but apparently "Lenny" had another glass o' wine and pulled the trigger on a third obol!
Is there a crisis line that I can call?=> so that makes "3" incuse lion squares!

I hope you appreciate how nicely centered your lion and scorpion are. That issue is often pretty far off and loses details.

Quote: I hope you appreciate how nicely centered your lion and scorpion are. Great group of coins! I like how the reverse punches served the function to better strike up the designs.

Yup, you're totally correct DVC => these coins are certainly a step-up from the classic incuse squares, which merely have an old stick-mark rather than a secondary coin design ... evolution of the coin-biz (I now have both types) => seriously ... man, how bloody primitive, yet cool are these old incuse coins?!! I'm currently lovin' this hobby!
