I just realized we were to enter two $50 sets so I can stick in this lower end group. Entry #2: Purchased at the May show in Baltimore from Don Zauche (a favorite dealer who only does shows - no mail orders). Some of his coins end up in a box marked 'half price' making $25 into $12.50 etc while some are just priced lower to start with. I bought several more coins from him that day but these added up to less than $50 so you see them here. These three were the middle of the five Gallienus I got from him that day but the nicest and worst would break the $50 limit. There was no postage but if you require me to add these coins share of my bus ticket, I still come in at $48 for the three. I hope to see Don September 28 at the Fredericksberg VA show (my next chance to spend foolishly).

I wonder how many entrants will offer single coins and how many groups? Do most of you buy groups to keep postage down?

Those are very nice. Notice the bottom one is the same Gallienus/Neptune as in my poor group. All of yours have detail on both sides.

Yes, I always try to buy in multiples ... it serves two economic purposes: a) if you are buying two or three coins from a seller, they usually seem more willing to shave-off that all so important 20-25% price-fat ... b) also, you are only paying for shipping once, rather than being dinged for $2-$10 from multiple dealers ... => the only obvious down-side to buying in multiples is that you require a bit more capital cash up-front to wheel the great deals, right? ... ummm, but unfortunately for the purpose of this SMACKDOWN, very few of my "deals" are for less than $50!! Beautiful coins echizento (oh, and everybody else as well)

Seller wanted $59 for the group, got him down to $45 but was thinking I still paid a bit too much. What do you think?

@echizento- I also think you got a good deal, and if you wanted to buy Greeks that seller is one of the ones I use and have used for quite sometime, and has never done me wrong. I think you should feel comfy with any purchase and I am sure the longer you do business with the dealer, the better deals you will get, I have gotten as much as $200 off a coin. @JW- I think your right.

I'd say $59 for the four would be a fair deal. The Neptune is easily $20; Probus $9 (due to porous surfaces) and the other two $15 each. Below that moves into good deal range. If I saw the group at those prices, I'd buy the Neptune and the Virtus making the Claudius $7 and Probus free. Looking at it that way makes it a good deal IMHO. More to the point, someone needs to post quickly or you will get my vote in this Smackdown.

under 50 dollars you say? we'll every coin I have is eligible for this one! lol! up to today, here is the most expensive single coin I've purchased this year...just got it today shipped to me for a big 8 dollars. I don't know the exact attribution, Indo-Greek Taxila coin, 2nd century BC. Obverse shows elephant and hill (not visible in picture really), reverse shows lion and a swastika symbol. If thickness counts for anything I should get some bonus points...shown below by U.S. quarter.... it weighs in at almost 13 grams. Plus it's square, that should get some some point also right?
