I was wondering what was thought of the gold coin for this series. From what I can tell, the mintage on either the proof or uncirculated coins are both rather low. If you remember last year the Medal of Honor and the Army commerative gold coins were also extremely low. Yet I think that the Star Spangled Banner Gold coin is lower than both of those.

I think that if I'm going to get the coin I should get it before the mint pushes the price even higher.

Any thoughts about acquiring this coin for your own collection?

I am not a collector of the modern gold commemorative issues ... and as such my views should be considered in the spirit of an interested CCF member trying to support your series of questions.

A quick check of the US Mint webpage indicates that the maximum authorized mintage for both Proof and Unc versions is 100,000 coins total across both issues ... doubt they will hit that target.

I suppose this will again be a lower mintage modern gold issue ... but it will not compare in mintage totals to many (most) of the classic series.

Current pricing is $510 Proof and $500 Unc ... for which you are purchasing a nice coin ... albeit with 0.2431 Oz gold ... and paying a $35 premium which does go to support the Maryland Battle of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.

I'm confused by your comment quoted below ...

Prices on precious metal issues from the US Mint are tied to precious metal prices ... the Mint does not just 'decide' to raise or lower them ... you can read for yourself the pricing spreadsheet for this issue at the link below ...

Nice coin ... let us know what you decide.

I dont collect the gold ones, but personally I love the designs on most of them. The only reason I stay away is that I think gold will come back down in the next couple years and if it doesn't I would like to see the 1600-1800 price range supported longer before making such substantial commitments to the coins. Just to much of a potential drop for my taste at the moment

I think he meant before the price went up from gold going up. With the gold though I believe the mint has it tied to a live pricing method where it changes automatically unlike the silver where you can buy right before they pull it for a price hike.

I'm a collector of the modern US commemorative gold series and have enjoyed assembling this very attractive set of coins â€" I purchased my SSB gold half-eagle on the first day of its availability. My preference has been the Uncirculated strikes of each gold coin rather than the Proof coins.

Within the gold uncirculated set, there have been a number of fairly low mintage coins that have experienced nice value appreciation since their release. The corresponding gold proof coins have not increased in value to the same extent.

If you are looking for the best chance of value appreciation in a gold SSB coin, I would suggest purchasing one of the Uncirculated pieces, last time I checked sales of the Unc coins were about 80% of the Proofs.

Here are a couple images of my Unc coin to compare against the artist depictions on the Mint's web site:

Is it a pretty design? I think so. Is it a good way to hold gold as a PM? I still think so. Is the unc the right one to get? I'm not sure...yes it undersells the proof, but the proof is super low compared to other proofs, and the finish on the stripes should be stunning in proof. It certainly is a stunning contrast in silver. Doesn't the proof have a much better chance of being the lowest proof than the unc being the lowest?

It is a tough choice and I agree that gold will go down some day. And when it does, so will the price. That is why I haven't bought any of the gold commems the past few years. Their price is tied too much to the price of gold.

If you NEVER plan to sell them, then that would be a good enough reason to buy them, but since you talked about mintage, I interpret that as meaning you want to sell it for a profit some day. Otherwise, mintage does not matter.

I prefer the proof myself, since it makes the design stand out better. The BU looks too washed out. And not just on this design, but most designs. And that is the main reason the proofs have a higher mintage. They look much nicer to most people.

Now if you can only afford to buy one this year and then the other next year, then I would buy the BU one now, since that will rise in price next year more so than the proof version.

I would like to add this one. But Gold coins are just to pricey for my modest coin budget.
Hope you get it and it a great looking Gold coin.
