On the reverse side of a 1879 Mexico 8 reales. There are no other marks. Nothing like the chopmarks I'm used to seeing so wondering if it is a countermark/stamp of some kind. Would appreciate any insight you may have.

Don't know but I want to hang around to find out. I would vote for chop mark though. Just an opinion though.

Thanks for everyone's feedback. I'm beginning to think this is an example of an assayer chopmark/stamp. I've read that coins with assay chopmarks rarely have additional chopmarks of other types (which would explain the rest of the coin being mark free). If I'm able to figure this out, will post what I find. Again, thank you for the feedback.
