I made my first ebay purchases over the weekend, sticking to those dealers rec'd here.

The first is a silvered <aximinus II Folles Jupiter from the Nicomedia mint. It's 5.13gms, 22.5mm in diameter:

What exactly is meant by "Folles Jupiter"?

The second is a Constantius II AE2. Obverse is DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG, pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, A behind. Reverse has FEL TEMP REPARATIO, soldier spearing fallen soldier, who is sitting on the ground with both hands up, A in left field, TS Epsilon in ex.

The first I bought directly, and the second I got in auction. Pretty happy with both of them. I have yet to receive them of course, but they look the part anyway.

What would you guys (and gals) have been willing to pay for both? I think it'd be useful to know what other consider value so I have a better idea myself in future.

Thanks!

Edit: photos enlarged.

First, a Follis is a denomination and the seller chose to id the coin by saying it is a Follis with a Jupiter reverse.

The images you posted are extremely small so I cannot comment on the value. However, both coins look to be in great shape. If you can post larger images, I would love to see them. The FelTemp looks like it might be really nice.

A follis is a silver plated coin and depending how well it survived and how well it was cleaned it could either have the silver plating left on or most of it stipped away.

I would like to see bigger pictures so we can tell what yours looks like but it looks pretty silver from the small image so hopefully it is a good one.

Details on both coins appear to be excellent, though as JW said the pictures are a bit small to tell anything els.

Quote:
The follis (plural folles) was a type of coin in the Roman and Byzantine traditions.

Quote:
The Roman follis was a large bronze coin introduced in about 294 with the coinage reform of Diocletian. It weighed about 10 grams and was about 4% silver, mostly as a thin layer on the surface.

Quote:
The follis of Diocletian, despite efforts to enforce prices with the Edict on Maximum Prices, was revalued and reduced. By the time of Constantine, the follis was smaller and barely contained any silver.

... I bought one last month (it is a Galerius Follis)

NOTE => einhard, your example looks like it's a beautiful coin!!

Thanks for the replies all. I hadn't realised the photos were so small until just now, and I was reaching for my magnifying glass!! I've edicted them and re-uploaded. Thanks for the info.

Both are great looking coins. The Maximinus Follis seems to be in great condition with excellent detail. The Constantius II FH is quite interesting. I have several FH type but not this type. I do not have this type with the horseman sitting on the ground. We had a discussion some time ago about the four types of FH. Doug, has a web page about them: http://dougsmith.ancients.info/ftr.html

Very nice.

Jupiter's nipples gave me a chuckle. Great looking coins you have there.

Both strike me as nice coins that I would expect to bring $30-50+. How much + is a matter of who and where the seller was. The second is a bit nicer in detail but a bit lower in surfaces than one I paid $29 for in 2000. FH2 seated horsemen bring a small premium but they are not rare enough to sell for a lot more than the other styles. The Follis is an exceptional strike with details not usually seen. The nose looks a little weak but that could be the photo. If so, I'd place it higher ($60?).

Thanks for the replies. I got the Maximinus for $46 in the Buy Now option. I quite like it, especially the good detail, and despite Jupiter's id nipples!!

The Constantius set me back a grand total of $3.57. Which I'm astonished at!

Only problem is, I think I might have a serious addiction now!

Yup, I'm hooked. Another vice to add to the list! The weird thing is I like the actual searching for and then buying coins almost as much as the having of them!
