I can't tell you what it is, but I can tell you it's not a pentagram. Pentagrams have five points (such as on Moroccan coins). What you have is a 6 pointed star, which is often called a Star of David, which is associated with Judaism. Around the edge are astrological symbols. I'm guessing it's some sort of token.

Yikes, yep this is some sort of occult/kabbalic/astrological token.

Obverse: Zodiac around the outside with an Ouroboros (note the head at 6 o'clock) circling a Star of David (a hexagram) with a backwards shin (ש) in the center?

Reverse: Not a clue.

EDIT: There also seem to be symbols on each point of the star, but I cannot make them out except for an omega at 12 o'clock?

Yes, it's a spiritualist/occult amulet. Both sides are depicted upside-down. On the right is a very stylized version of the "Key of Solomon" pentacle, the full version of which can be seen at the top of this translation of the Kabbalistic magic book, also titled the "Key of Solomon".

The side with the hexagram is not a direct copy of one of the Keys of Solomon pentacles, though it shares much of the symbolism.

The 10 symbols arranged around the outside are astrological/astronomical symbols for the Sun, Moon and the eight known-at-the-time planets. I say "astronomical" because, to the best of my knowledge, astrology has usually been reluctant to incorporate into their computations the "modern" planets Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, the symbols for which are included on this medal.

The inclusion of Pluto clearly dates the medal to the period between its discovery and acclamation as a planet in 1930, and its formal demotion to minor planet in 2006.

Well now I feel like a dope, as I recognized it right off the bat when it's right-side-up. :-)
