I bought a 66 Panamanian Balboa that was listed as nice with "uncirculated details." From the picture it was not evident that it was a proof, but I'm pretty sure it is now that I can see it with my own eyes.
The question I have: Does a lightly handled proof coin sort of have worse stigma about it than a coin actualluy intended for circulation but with unc details?

Yeah it does because that proof was not supposed to be handled in the first place. Just for curiosity can you post a picture.

From what I have read over the years, proof coins that enter circulation will never have "uncirculated details" if graded, it will always grade Proof (with the lower grade), such as PR-45 (as the coin was struck with Proof Dies) that is common with proof only issues from the 19th Century that had entered circulation...

I disagree. They have a much a stronger strike, so it takes more for them to wear down.

and one taken outside in the sunlight to show how reflective it is (why I thought it was a proof, not one intended for circ.

if it wasn't a proof and it was in this condition, it would be in MS shape and I'd be happy with it, but since its a proof and it's like this I almost don't want it. what does everyone else think? I paid 31.75 after shipping.

In terms of wear I agree, but the mirrors on the proofs go real fast in circulation or just start looking terrible imo

Bottom line, it's a nice chunk of silver at a reasonable price...

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but a proof coin is always a proof coin. It can't go from proof to AU58. It becomes a mis-handled and or less desirable proof coin. Just like an MS quality coin can be proof-like but never be a proof strike coin. Proof is a type of strike not a business strike condition grade. Any thoughts?

Correct, proof is always proof, but it can go from PR69 to PR58 (and all the way down to PR1).
