Hi all,

Would be grateful for any info on a medal (50mm dia) appears to be nickel plated brass depicting two pigeons facing each other (one on a block) and the inscription 'Olympiad 1977'. It also has the 5 ring Olympic symbol. The back is completely flat and plain and I can see no engraver's initials anywhere.

Thanks in advance if anyone has any clue.

Ivan

AFAIK, Pigeon Racing was never part of the Modern Olympics, not to mention that were no Olympics held in 1977(Montreal was 1976). It is also odd that "Olympiad" and the Five Rings are present as the IOC is usually very tight with the usage of their trademarked symbols. As an aside, my grandfather raced pigeons in the 1920s-1930s in Southern Illinois.

Hi Biokemist6,

Thanks for your interest and yes, I also thought it strange to see the five ring symbol because, as you say, the IOC is very strict so there must be some explanation that makes sense. Hope someone will be able to shed some light in the days ahead it has me stumped !

Regards,

Ivan Parker

Seems that in 1977 there was some Pigeon Olympiad in Blackpool, UK. See "History of the Show" near the bottom of this page: http://www.rpra.org/events/show-of-the-year/
