It seems that a lot of the coins of Gallienus may have seen little circulation.
They seem to turn up quite often in unworn condition.

I have three is about EF or 'as struck' condition, for which I originally paid not much some years ago.

As debasement got worse and worse, previous coins got hoarded quicker than ever before. The only time coins get a lot of wear is when the same weight and fineness standards remained for a long time. We see a lot of worn Flavians because they were not terribly better than coins issued for the next 50 years but the first year of Gallienus was so much better than the second and each succeeding year that no single issue remained in circulation for a long time. The most often found worn coin is the Legionary denarius of Mark Antony. When issued they were debased more than other coins of their day so people spent them and saved the better coins of Augustus. By the time debasement of newly issued coins reached their level (about the time of Trajan?), many of them were worn enough that they were not as heavy or desirable as the new coins so we see them mixed into hoards a lot later than any other Republican coin. As a result, EF Legionaries are hard to find but AG examples are pretty common.

I am curious, as the debasement persisted, and people hoarded the nice coins, were they hoarding the coins for there, beautiful renderings or were they being hoarded for their metal content? Would it be fair to say that they "buying power" of these coins was the same as they circulated side by side and any given area? I know the answer probably wont be easy to answer and I am sure the answer will vary depending on what part of the empire in which we are talking. The debasement of the coins, I have always found fascinating. I suppose we are seeing the decline of the economy, echoing the trends of the past. Our US penny is a rather sad thing...coated in only a thin layer of copper and surprisingly still worth more as a metal blank then a unit of currency.
