I know it's not much to look at, but I've been eyeing this type of coin for some time. So, being a fan of the simple coins struck at Castulo, Spain, I couldn't pass this up when the price was in my range. It is an AE As, struck in the early 2nd Century BC. It measures 36mm and weighs in at 41g: OBV: Diademed male head right REV: Sphinx standing right, raising forepaw; star above paw, letter below

Not bad jw.
The portrait is good and most of the legend is there. That's a large one too.

Thanks all. This is my third coin from Castulo. The other two have the bull reverse. These coins are not elaborate and, to me, are appealing because of their simplicity.

ahahaha ... Yes Bing, I think that you are correct ... I think if your Leon Sphinx coin took-on my PHILOPATOR, it would be a bit like the following: ... hello, little man ... again => super cool coin, Bing!!

Nice sphynx! Is the alphabet Roman, Greek, or something else?

The legend is in "Iberian", but to me it looks very similar to Greek

I wondered if it has some relation to Phoenician, but it's called Greco-Iberian.

I don't have any coins from Spain in my collection. They are an interesting coin type, I'm going to have to see about acquiring some. Nice coin JW.

The Carthaginians subjugated the tribes in Iberia, whom had long traded with the Greeks of Italy and Sicily, then eventually surrendered those territories to Rome.
