Hi! I collect some ancient coppers and somewhere along the way I read olive oil was good for cleaning ancient coppers. so I dunked the coins in high food grade olive oil. but after 6 months of immersion, they took on a black coloration which I now find difficult to take out.

Is there some or any way to "re-clean" the ancient coppers?

thanks

Nic,
I haven't used olive oil for that long, and only use it on bronze coins that are in really bad shape...heavy encrustations and the like. I have heard olive oil can darken bronze coins, so not surprised about copper. I don't know what you can do to lighten them...I have a feeling it would be difficult to change the color back without damaging the coin but I'd get an expert opinion form someone here.

Nic......

I have cleaned many coins, all I use is olive oil, but I only soak them a week at a time, take them out and brush them off, throw them back, repeat till you get hem clean as you want...some times it takes 6 to 7 mts...to finish, as far as your dark coin, I would wash it off with warm soapy water, them throw it back in, take it out once a week and brush it off.. good luck.....

I no longer clean coins, but I remember that olive oil will darken the coin, even in short baths. I think it best to use distilled water baths.

I have used olive oil for years and have got very good results. It does tend to darken the coins some, but I found that if I use extra virgin olive oil it doesn't darken then too much.
