Are these silver dollars considered NCLT? Or are they in their own category?

They are NCLT and also commemorative silver dollars. If you want to classify them even more, they are special edition silver dollars.

There have been 13 such sp. ed. dollars (not counting enameled and gold plated types). Feel free to add to the list if I missed any.

year description
1997 Flying Loon 10th anniversary
1999 International Year of Older People
2001 Replica of 1911 Silver Dollar Design
2002 The Queen Mother
2003 Voyageurs with Canoe (a second type was issued in a set only)
2004 Special Edition Silver Poppy
2006 Medal of Bravery non-enamel
2007 Celebration of the Arts
2010 Spec Ed. 75th anniversary 1935-2010
2011 Special Ed Proof Silver dollar 1911-2011
2012 Grey Cup
2012 Stampede
2012 25th Anniversary Loon

Some folks may not include the anniversary loons in this set and the two loons is also debatable though for me it's not a sp. ed dollar.

We you can see that the Mint is piling on the sp. ed. dollars recently. Hopefully they don't issue 3 in 2013 but I suspect that they will.

Thanks CC-Ottawa! I see that some of them have 'Special Edition' in their names, some don't. So what makes one a special edition?

I see I also excluded the two high relief coins toos. I have the silver dollars in five categories - regular, special, high relief, enamel and selective gold plate.

The Mint has issued a regular cased proof silver dollar every year since 1971. In some years, they have issued additional 'special' silver dollars that generally have mintages that are significantly lower that the regular proofs. Sometimes, they call them special and sometimes they don't but in general, anything that is not the regular issue is special IMO.

I have just gotten the 2013 Charlton Catalogue of Canadian Coins and the Celebration of Arts coin is valued at 75 there ... I have no idea how they come up with the prices as it does not match the trends. Any ideas anyone ?

@Adorus, look up the glass Ladybug. You'll be surprised. The Charlton guide really is just trying to give people some idea and it's nowhere near accurate or reflecting the present trend from my personal experience. The guide for circulation is the more practical and useful, not so much for the NCLTs. Just my 2 cents. I had the same reaction like you reading it the first time.

Keep in mind that the prices in the catalogues are set months before it goes to print so can easily be out of date. Kind of like looking at stock prices six months ago compared to today in some cases.

I haven't checked but aren't the special edition dollars normally only issued as proof with no BU version?

You just can't find these this coin around. Not many auctions for it and I can't find an online dealer that has any stock of them. I ended up paying the $240.00 for the one auction on ebay. It was the last commemorative I needed to have the whole set. I am missing some versions where there are proof, enamelled, and gold plated in the same coin and I do not have any of the BU and don't intend on it. It is a nice set but a little expensive for some. The only SD I am missing now is the 1948 to have all of them from 1935 - 2012.
